SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 4, 2015 JV Lady Cards bring home second win Lady Cardinals fought hard Girls defeated by Huskies, dominated by Knights in two rough matches Katie Gilbert, Kaitlin Garrett, Rachel Holland, Jessie Flynn and Maggie Flynn play defense against the Sherman County team. –Contributed photo Ione varsity girls trav- elled to Sherman County Friday for a start of a long weekend of basketball. With multiple players gone due to illness, Ione rallied the best they could. The Lady Cardinals led the first quarter but Sherman was determined to press the young team to their limits, eventually taking the game by a score of 38-25. “Turnovers and fouls were both too high and al- lowed Sherman to take the lead in the second quarter,” said Ione Coach Mike Gar- rett. “This limited what we could do the rest of the game. If we can improve in those two areas, I am sure we can have a very com- petitive game the next time we play.” Cardinal game stats vs. Sherman County: Ione 25, Sherman 38 Jessie Flynn: 4 re- bounds, 2 assists, 5 personal fouls, 2 points; Katie Gil- bert: 2 rebounds, 4 points: Morgan Orem: 7 rebounds, 2 personal fouls, 2 points: Maggie Flynn: 4 personal fouls; Ivy Sandford: 2 re- bounds, 2 assists, 4 personal fouls: Rachel Holland: 9 re- bounds, 2 assists, 4 personal fouls, 4 points; Lauren Gar- rett: 3 personal fouls, 3 points; Kaitlin Garrett: 10 rebounds, 2 personal fouls, 10 points. On Saturday, the Lady Cards travelled to Condon/ Wheeler, where the Knights dominated over the Lady Cards. “Condon/Wheeler is a very good team that has a lot of experience, especially with their top three players. How well you do against them is all about compo- sure and limiting your mis- takes,” said Garrett. “We are getting so much better as the season continues, but we had two stretches where we turned the ball over multiple times and gave up some easy points. We weren’t able to recover from that. “The positive that comes from playing them on back to back Saturdays is they give us a lot of things to work on as we make our run to try and get into the Big Sky District Tourna- ment,” added Garrett. Next Friday they travel to Dufur to take on the Rangers at 6 p.m. On Saturday they will host Arlington at 4 p.m. Ione’s JV Lady Cardinals won against the Sherman County Huskies 34-31 last Friday night at an away game. It was a fast and hard game played by all with a lot of aggressive plays by both teams.
