The Mustangs, who are 12-3 for the season and 3-2 in CBC play, dispatched of the Weston-McEwen Tiger- Scots by a score of 77-41. They then travelled to Cul- ver and beat the Bulldogs 61-39 on Saturday. The Mustangs were beaten by the TigerScots three times last year and this year’s team was not going to let that happen again. Heppner broke the Tiger- Scot press early and often to score many easy baskets. This allowed them to jump out to a big lead at the end of the first quarter 20-5. The Mustangs contin- ued their hot shooting and scored 22 points in the second quarter and Weston- McEwen scored 15 to make the score 42-20 at halftime. In the third quarter, Heppner more than doubled up their opponent as the Mustangs scored 16 points to the TigerScots’ 7. The score was 58-27 as the fourth quarter started. In that frame Heppner kept the heat on and out- scored the TigerScots 19-14 to secure the win 77-41. A balanced scoring at- tack saw Patrick Collins get 21 points for the team. He also had 9 rebounds, 2 as- sists, 1 blocked shot and 1 steal. CJ Kindle contributed 12 points, 6 assists and 1 rebound in the game. Ross Cutsforth had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 1 assist. Jessie Corbin, Weston Put- man and Logan Grieb all scored 9 points each in the game. Putman also had 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. Corbin also con- tributed 5 rebounds and 1 assist. To go along with Grieb’s 9 points, he also had 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal for the team. Caden Hedman had 3 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist. Kevin Murray and Jake Lindsay each scored 2 points in the game and Murray also had 3 rebounds. Kolby Currin had 1 rebound in the game. Heppner shot 48 per- cent from the field and held Weston-McEwen to just 35 percent shooting for the game. Heppner out- rebounded the TigerScots by a 36-22 margin. The Mustangs also had 15 as- sists on their 31 baskets scored. After an early-morning exit from Heppner and an almost four-hour bus ride to Culver, the Mustangs came out strong and took control of the game with the Bull- dogs early. Heppner jumped out to a 17-9 lead after one quarter and stretched it to 32-17 at halftime. A closer second half saw the Mustangs win the third quarter 15-11 and the fourth quarter 14-11. That made the final score of the game 61-39 in favor of the Mustangs. Collins again led the team with 22 points, 9 re- bounds, 1 blocked shot and 1 steal. Grieb finished the game with 14 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal. Kindle had 7 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists for the Mustangs. Cutsforth scored 6 points, had 2 re- bounds, 2 assists, 1 block and 1 steal. Corbin and Put- man each scored 5 points in the game. They both also finished with 3 rebounds and 1 assist each. Corbin also had 1 blocked shot and Putman recorded 1 steal. Currin came in and scored 2 points and Lindsay and Murray each had 1 rebound in the game. The Mustangs shot 53 percent from the field in the game and 75 percent from the free-throw line. They continued their streak of not being outrebounded in a game this season as they controlled the glass in this one 24-16. Heppner is currently the third-ranked team in the latest OSAA 2A State Bas- ketball poll. The team has a CBC game with the Pilot Rock Rockets this Friday night in Heppner. Mustang girls split another week of conference play The Heppner Mustang girls basketball team split their Columbia Basin Con- ference games this past weekend. The Mustangs (7-9, 2-3) lost a tough home game to the Weston-McE- wen TigerScots 42-39 on Friday night. They then travelled to Culver and beat the Bulldogs by a score of 38-32 on Saturday. In the game against the TigerScots, Heppner started out slowly and trailed at the end of one quarter 19-5. The team picked it up in the second quarter and outscored their opponents 15-8. That cut the Weston- McEwen lead in half and the Mustangs trailed at the intermission by a score of 27-20. The teams played even in the third quarter and the score was 36-29 as the fourth quarter started. The Heppner girls worked hard and pulled to within one point near the end of the game. The game could have gone either way but the TigerScots held on for the 42-39 win. Leading the way for the Mustangs was Maddie Lindsay with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 1 blocked shot. Heppner outscored the Bulldogs 11-4 in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 29-20. A fast-and-furious fourth quarter saw the Bulldogs nearly catch the Mustangs a couple of times. Heppner held off their charges and finished up the quarter by outscor- ing the Bulldogs 12-9. That made the final score 38-32, with the Mustangs getting the win. Wilson led the team in scoring with 13. She also had 3 rebounds and 1 assist.
