The zone is used to attract new businesses and so far has been very successful, with major new expansions and job creation from Con Agra Foods and Tillamook Cheese, and new computer server farms constructed by Vadata, a division of Amazon.com. The CREZ board has received and disbursed some funds already, mainly on housing, public safety and education, but wants to avoid having a stream o f groups and districts coming to it with requests. The board felt establishing the spending categories and disbursing the funds in lump sums to major organizations around the county would be the best way to go. “ We should look at larger categories where we don’t have to deal with every request,” said Neal, who is also general manager of the Port of Morrow. “If it is education, we push it (the funds) out there and let those that deal with education take care of the specifics.” The lone and Morrow County education foundations are examples already used by the CREZ for disbursing education funds. The Willow Creek Economic Development Group has also received funding for a housing program. A l t h o u g h no set percentage of the yearly f unds has yet been e a r m a r k e d for each category, it was suggested that education be given 30 to 35 percent of the money coming in each year. “I would like to see the money go to help our kids get a better education and go get a better job,” said board member Greg Sweek. Many board members agreed the money should be used to help local young people be better prepared to find employment. “We should help the kids go out and find a good job in the market,” said board chairman Don Russell. “We are getting money from the data companies, and do we want that money to train for jobs there?” asked CREZ manager Carla McLane rhetorically. ITie board also discussed possible partnerships with the businesses at the Port to provide more workforce training for the jobs being created. The major contributors so far to the CREZ are Rack Space which will put in S2.7 million over 15 years, Columbia River Technologies, or Tillamook Cheese, which will pay $4.875 million. Vadata at $599.000, Columbia Plywood at $75,000 and the biggest, ConAgra Foods, which is putting in a major expansion at the Port, and is set to pay $14.25 million to CREZ over the next 15 years. In other business the board looked over a list of charitable and other organizations, which will be presented to businesses in the enterprise zone for possible direct funding from those businesses. Any funds donated to the groups will be offset against the fees the businesses are contracted to pay the CREZ. The charitable giving is a way for the businesses to directly give money to worthwhile organizations in the county. So far McLane has compiled a list of eight cities, towns and chambers within Morrow County, 27 special taxing districts. 17 community organizations, and 12 youth organizations. - FIVE HES announces perfect attendance Heppner Elementary School has announced that 33 students obtained 2 nd Se me s t er Perfect Attendance for 2013- 14.
