Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 28,2014 - THREE Cardinals fly home from state with medals lone library greets summer with ‘Fizz, Boom, Read!’ The lone Cardinals sent three athletes to the OSAA 1A State Championships last week at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene. Out of a large field of competitors, lone men took 13lh o f 44 with 20 points, all earned by Bailey Haguewood, while the women landed 2 1st of 36 w ith 16 points, all earned by Jessie Flynn. M e a n w h i l e , on t he i n d i v i d u a l f r ont , Haguewood had a season best in high jump, tying his personal record set at state last year. Jessie Flynn had a personal record both days in the 400 prelim and the 400 final, and a season record in the 300M hurdles final. All three athletes made finals in all their events, with six of the seven events endi ng on the podium with medals earned. Full i ndi vi dual stats are as follows: M en’s results Discus - 1.6kg - Class 1A S u mme r is com ing and the lone library has an exciting, science-focused summer program called “ Fizz, Boom, Read” in the works for kids in the community. The kick-off event is the day after school lets out, June 12, at 1 p.m. in the lone Community School gym. The afternoon will feature Charlie Brown, a visiting comedy and juggling act. After enjoying the show, participants are invited to stick around for the hands- on circus arts workshop with Charlie and his wife Zephyr; learn to juggle, hula hoop, balance things, practice the Chinese yo-yo, spin ribbon and just have fun and move your body. The Topic Club will provide refreshments. There is no age limit for the absolutely free and open to the public event. Starting at this event, children can register for the summer reading prize program and receive a reading log to track the number of minutes they read or are read to. They can bring their logs into the library and get prizes for certain numbers of minutes read. , Additionally, there will be weekly programs on Tuesdays. Programs for the younger crowd will include stories, hands-on activities, crafts, music and more. The ol der k i d s ’ program will tie literature. both fiction and nonfiction, to fun, quality hands-on science activities and crafts. All programs are free. No registration or sign-ups are necessary. The summer programs will begin on June 12 and run through July, wrapping up with a party to celebrate reading accomplishments. lone students attend Music in May lone music teach Jordan Bemrose took students (L-R) Jorge Aguilar, Charlette Burghard and Oskar Peterson to “Music in May” at Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR May 22-24. Founded in 1948, Music in May is one of the longest-running high school music festivals in the U.S; high-school music directors recognize the event as a way to recognize students who excel in orchestra, choir and band. Approximately 5U0 students participate each year, though event coordinators say far more are nominated. -Contributedphoto lone youngsters take a hike - - - Fourth of July 5K to benefit Wounded Warriors The lone Lady Cardinal basketball team will again host the lone Fourth o f July Dawn’s Early Light 5K. Run/W alk. As with last year, proceeds from the event will go to the Wounded Warrior Project. The w a lk /ru n w ill take place July 4 with registration at 7:30 a.m. and the race to begin at 8 a.m.; entry fee is $10. The race will start on lone’s Main Street across from the lone Fire Hall. Last year the girls, in conjunction with the lone American Legion Auxiliary, raised nearly $2,500 for the Wounded Warrior Project; they say they hope to exceed that this year with a team fundraising goal o f $4,500.
