The company’s job posting says its data center engineering operations team, “ ...works to maintain the critical physical infrastructure that supports Amazon Web Services. Specifically, this team works to ensure that the data center’s MEP operates at 100% availability while m aintaining first-class customer service to the teams and groups within the data centers.” Behind that corporate- speak is the fact the engineering operations te c h n ic ia n (E O T ) is responsible for operating and m a in ta in in g all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life-safety equipment within the data center. Data center equipment supports servers critical to the company’s mission and, so, the company says, must maintain better than 99.999 percent uptime. I t’s the EO T’s jo b to make sure that happens, serving as the front-line responders for hands-on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting and operation. T hat h a n d s-o n operation could include an y th in g from d iesel generators to cooling towers, chemical treatment systems, pumps, motors and building automation system s. And, in case anyone gets the idea that this is a desk kind of job, candidates are also required to “work at heights,” “bend or tw ist the body into unusual positions while working,” “work in a noisy environment” and “work at depths.” A ll th a t, p lu s, if you please, operating e n g in e e rin g lic e n se s such as DC II. On the other hand, the job of data center technician includes “troubleshooting and repairing servers with hardw are and network issu e.” Work involves hardware diagnostic and replacem ent o f failed com ponents, and these technicians are responsible for day-to-day incident management of servers and networking equipment.
