A fu n e ra l s e rv ic e w as held at 10 a.m. on S a tu r d a y , A p r il 26, at St. Patrick’s C a th o lic C h u rc h in Heppner, OR. A g rav esid e service was held at 11 a.m. at th e H e p p n e r „a Masonic Cemetery. Grace N ona G ra c e was born May 7, 1922 in Hardman. OR, to Pirl and Verna (M cCarty) Howell. Her mother was a school teacher in Burton Valley, commuting from Hardman on horseback. Her mother taught Nona for the first se v e ra l y e a rs o f g rad e school. She g rad u a ted from high school in Pendleton. OR and returned to Heppner. w orking as secretary to H eppner School D istrict for several years. She then moved to Eugene, OR. and attended the University of Oregon. After Pearl Harbor she jo in e d O r e g o n 's C itiz e n s D efense Corps. Later in the w ar, she was offered a civilian position at M arine A ttack ___ Squadron (V M A ) Mae 2 1 4 , in G o le ta , CA ( n e a r S a n ta Barbara), working with notables such as Col. Greg (Pappy) Boyington, and American fighter ace Joe Foss. After the war she worked as a law clerk in Santa Barbara, where she m arried William Sowell. Her daughter Marsha was born on May 21, 1949. T he c o u p le r e lo c a te d to H ep p n er, w h ere the m a rria g e e n d e d . N ona then worked for Heppner School District, and later 9 Heppner Pine Mills, which eventually became Kinzua Corp. In 1975 she m arried Ray Grace, also o f Heppner. During the follow ing years they traveled extensively, as Ray worked in the Middle East, South America, and the Pacific, including nine years in Hawaii. Nona loved to travel, and they visited many different nations. In 1995 they retired home to H eppner to spend som e time with the children and g ran d ch ild ren , although they still traveled at least once a year until recently. Nona loved deer and elk h u n tin g , as did her parents. Her biggest bull w as a th re e -p o in t. She d e a rly loved to tra v e l, seeing many countries and meeting many ethnic people groups. Her home became a showplace o f special items to remind her o f her travels. She loved working in her yard and garden, and was especially fond o f roses. She passionately loved her gran d ch ild ren and great grandchildren. Nona is survived by her husband. Ray Grace son-in-law, G reg Sweek; grandson, lan Sw eek of Boise, ID; granddaughter, Talia S pencer o f Boise, ID; stepson. Clay Grace o f Albany, OR; and three great-grandch i Idren. She was preceded in death by: her parents. Pirl and Verna Howell; sister, W anda B oland; and her daughter. Marsha Sweek. Christina Lee Sharp-Mollahan C hristina Lee Sharp- Mollahan. 76, formerly of L exington, passed away April 17, 2014 at Valley View Assisted Living and Retirement Home in John Day, OR with her children in attendance. Her family held a private burial on April 21 in Scotts M ills, OR. where Christina was interred near her parents and brothers. A Celebration o f Life will be held at Clyde H oliday Park in M ount Vernon, OR, at a date to be determined later in the summer. Christina was bom in Silverton, OR on June 2, 1937, the second child bom to Richard Isaac Sharp and Evelyn Elizabeth (Olson) Sharp. She was raised in the W ilhoit Springs area outside o f M olalla. Beamer, 100, o f Heppner, died Sunday, April 27, 2014 at her home. Graveside service will held Saturday, May 3, at 10 a.m. at the H eppner M asonic Cemetery. A light meal and reception will follow at St. Patrick’s Senior Center. Mary was born July 27, 1913 in Heppner. She was one of eight children bom to Robert and LeVonnie (Raines) Gammell. Mary was raised and attended school in I leppner from the first through the 12th grade. On August 30. 1934 she married Ralph Beamer at 1 leppner; the couple resided on the Beamer Ranch south o f H eppner, w here they raised two children, R. Neil, and Janice Jean. M ary w as an o ld - A Cinco de Mayo meal is planned for Sunday, May 4, from 4-6 p.m. at St. Patrick’s parish hall in Heppner. The meal will include a tostada, beans, rice, dessert and a drink for $5; extra tostadas will be $1 each. Children five and under are free.
