Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 11,2013 - THREE HHS girls and boys bring home trophies HHS Mustang wrestlers start season Blake Greenup, Brian Rill named MVPs The Heppner High School Boys and G irls Varsity Basketball teams kicked off the new season by bringing home the cham pionship trophies for the Warrenton Warrior T ip -O ff T o u rn a m e n t. Both teams played good competition and won both of their games. The girls’ team played Warrenton first and defeated the Warriors by a score o f 51-45. It was a close game early in the contest as the score was 10-9 in favor of Warrenton after one quarter of play. With several fast break baskets and good outside shooting, the Mustangs outscored the Warriors in the second quarter 17-4 to take a 26- 14 lead at halftime. The W arrenton press led to some easy baskets for the Warriors as they outscored the Mustangs 20-8 in the third quarter. Heppner then put on a press of their own and outscored the Warriors 17-11 in the fourth quarter to get the win. The game was stopped for a while near the end as Paige Grieb suffered a broken nose. She was going for a loose ball and was run into by a Warrenton player. After a trip to the Astoria hospital, she was able to return the next day and cheer on her team from the sidelines. Blake Greenup led the Mustangs in scoring with 14 and Kelly Wilson had Route 74 Restaurant will be closing early on Sunday December 15th at 2pm We are having our employee Christmas 10. Kayla Kindle followed with 8 points and Maddie Lindsay scored 7. Micha Hintz was next with 6 and G rieb scored 2. Kindle hauled in 8 rebounds and Lindsay had 5. Hintz led the team in assist with 5. In the boys’ game from F riday night the M ustangs tram pled the Warrenton Warriors by a score of 57-28. Heppner started the game fast and never looked back as they led 25-2 after one quarter. They then led by a score o f 38-11 at halftime. O f the 38 points at half, 26 of them were scored off of fast break opportunities. The Mustangs outscored the Warriors 19-17 in the second half to win by the score of 57-28. Brian Rill led the boys in scoring with 16 and CJ Kindle was next with 9 points. Freshman Logan Grieb made his first start o f his high school career and finished with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assist for the game. JC Putman had 6 points and 6 rebounds. Tate Gentry and Andrew Hatfield each scored 5 points and Jesse Corbin and Ross Cutsforth both fin ish e d w ith 4. Wes Putman had 3 and Patrick Collins 2 points. Rebounding was led by Grieb, Collins and Putman with 6 each and Andrew Hatfield had 5. Following Grieb with 6 assist were Corbin and Kindle with 3 each. On Saturday both teams played the Knappa Loggers. The girls’ team won a hard-fought contest by a score of 42-30. The score o f the close game was 23-20 at halftime in favor of the Mustangs. The Loggers did take the lead in the third quarter for a short time, but the Mustangs then took control of the game by outscoring Knappa 10-4 in the fourth quarter for the final margin o f victory. Greenup again led the team The Heppner High School Mustang wrestling team started off the 2013- 2014 season in llermiston on Saturday December 7. Heppner’s Ryan Smith (1061bs), Jared Lemmon (1381bs) and Treston Ma- ben (1601bs) teamed up with Hermiston wrestlers to form a fourth entry into the four-way dual that in cluded Hermiston’s varsity, HHS boys’ team LR- Coach Jeremy Rosenbalm, CJ Kindle, Lewiston and Post Falls. Logan Grieb, Jaden Orr, JC Putman, Patrick Collins, Brian Smith won all three of his Rill, Ross Cutsforth, Andrew Hatfield, Weston Putman, matches, two by pin. Lem Jesse Corbin, Tate Gentry. mon and Maben went 2-1 for the day, each winning two by pin. Will Lutcher (1381bs), Jesse Boyd ( 1381bs), Jacob Moses ( 1601bs), Joe Garcia (160!bs) and Cord Flynn competed for Heppner in a separate individual tourna ment. Lutcher won both bouts by fall and Boyd won his two, one by fall and one by technical fall. The Mustang grap- piers next compete Friday. December 13, and Satur day, December 14, in La Grande in the expected 22- team Muilenburg Tourna ment that features teams in classifications 1A-6A from Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Heppner High School Wrestling Schedule HHS girls’ team LR- Coach Melissa Lindsay, Rilee Kollman, Jessica Kempkin, Maddie Lindsay, Caitlynn Bailey, Paige Grieb, Blake Greenup, Kayla Kindle, Micha Hintz, Coach Jeromy Wilson. Not Pictured- Kelly Wilson, Maci Gibbs. in scoring with 14 points. Kindle followed with 12 and Wilson had 11. Hintz and Lindsay each scored 2 and Macy Gibbs chipped in 1 point. Greenup also had 10 rebounds for the game and Lindsay and Kindle fo llo w ed w ith 6 each. Jessica Kempkin hauled in 5 rebounds and Wilson 4. Hintz had 4 assist, Greenup 3 and Wilson 2. The Mustang boys’ team played a very strong Knappa team and won by a score of 68-56. The game was tied after one quarter 14-14, and Heppner led 27-26 at halftime. At the end of the third quarter the Mustangs only led 44-41. Heppner then went on to outscore the Loggers 24-15 in the fourth quarter to get the win. Collins had a big game with 27 points and 16 rebounds. Rill scored 16 and had 8 rebounds and 5 assist. JC Putman chipped in 11 points, 14 rebounds and 2 assists. Kindle had 6 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assist. Grieb scored 5 points, had 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Hatfield rounded out the scoring w ith 3 points. Blake Greenup was honored as the MVP of the g irls’ tournament. Kelly Wilson and Kayla Kindle were on the all-tournament team. On the boys’ side, Brian Rill was named the tournament MVP. Named to the boys’ all-tournament team for Heppner were JC Putman, Patrick Collins and Logan Grieb. The Mustangs play in Imbler on Tuesday and then host a tournam ent this weekend. The teams attending are Arlington, Crane and lone.
