The Slotee Memorial Scholarship is aw arded annually to a junior, senior or graduate student at an accredited four-year college or university. The sc h o la rsh ip is given annually in order of priority, with first choice to a student majoring or m inoring in music and second to a student who has been accepted into a school of education. C r i t e r i a u s e d in awarding this scholarship include scholarship, leadership, citizenship, fin an c ia l need, and probability o f success in the student’s chosen field. As of July, the Porter & the Pale Ales Heppner’s own Music in the Park returns to Hager Park (near the dam) on Sunday, Aug. 25, from 5-7 p.m. Sharon Porter, Matt C ooper and frien d s (a co llab o ratio n o f gifted m u s ic ia n s s o m e tim e s known as Porter & the Pale Ales) will entertain with a variety of instruments and well-known tunes from the 1930s through the 60s. The c o m m u n ity is invited to bring lawn chairs to another evening of great music sponsored by the Morrow County Unified R ecreation D istrict and facilitated by the Shared Ministry of Hope Lutheran C hurch and All Saints Episcopal Church. Food will be available for purchase to raise funds for the Shared Ministry’s well-building mission trip to Guatemala in December. T he Ci t y o f l o n e received a $ 10,000 grant for a city hall HVAC upgrade, lone American Legion Post #95 also received a $10,000 grant, this one for a roof replacement. The Boardm an Community Development Association also received $2,000 to cons t r uct a recreational pavilion at Marker 40 Beach. The W ild h o rse Foundation, a community benefit fund established by the Confederated Tribes o f the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) to support organizations in northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington, awarded a total of $239,467 to 35 recipients, bringing the total for 2013 to almost $450,000. The W ild h o rse Foundation Board will consider awarding g ran ts to appl i cat i ons that cover the areas of public health and safety, education, the arts, historic preservation, gambling addiction services, salmon restoration, environmental protection, and cultural activities. The quarterly deadlines for requests are Jan. 1, April 1, July 1 and Oct. 1.
