UMCDF plans workforce reduction HERM ISTON, O R - The Um atilla Chem ical Agent Disposal Facility (U M C D F) reduced its workforce by about 100 positions Thursday, Aug. 1. This Reduction in Force (R IF ) included m ostly w orkers from the plant organizations—primarily operations and maintenance positions with URS—and 18 Southw est Research Institute (SwRI) employees, the su b co n trac to r that o p e ra te s the p ro je c t’s laboratory. UMCDF has conducted several RIFs since the project completed chemical agent operations in October 2011, all coinciding with a significant milestone. The Aug. 1 RIF is tied to the determination that the site is ready for demolition work. The contractor hired to demolish the building w h e re th e c h e m ic a l weapons were processed, and the associated pollution ab atem en t system s, is massing its equipment at the site. Northwest Demolition o f Tigard, OR, plans to begin demolition work on Aug. 15. T h e p r o je c t w ill have approximately 165 employees remaining after the Aug. 1 RIF. When the p ro jec t com pleted destruction o f O regon’s chemical weapons stockpile in late 2011 it had about 830 employees.
