Community Pride volunteers find pipe bomb on side of road 5 (K By Patty Nance Volunteers got a little more than they bargained for in Boardman on Satur day during the town’s Com munity Pride Day. According to Board- man Police C hief Rick Stokoe, volunteers were picking up litter and debris along Oregon Trail Drive when they discovered a suspicious device about five feet off the road. The device turned out to be a pipe bomb filled with gunpowder and nails, Stokoe said. Had it detonated, Stokoe said, it would likely have caused injury. While Oregon Train Drive is not very populated. Stokoe said there is a lot of vehicle traffic as well as foot traffic. “This device was de signed to kill someone,” he said. “It was made from powder and nails and some one had to have a little bit of experience to make it.” Stokoe said volunteers called police when the de vice was found. The Oregon State Police. Morrow Coun ty SherifFs Department and Morrow County A m bu lance service all provided assistance to the Boardman department. The Boardman Police Department will remain the lead agency in the investi gation. Currently, there are no suspects and the incident is still under investigation. Stokoe said anyone who observes suspicious articles or subjects should call 911. lone hires special education director as new principal VOL. 132 N O. 18 8 Pages The lone School District has hired Sarah Crane-Simpson of Pendleton as its new principal, beginning July 1. Crane-Simpson will replace Jerry Archer who Wednesday, May 1, 2013 Morrow County, Heppner, Oregon will retire June 30 after three years in lone. Heppner High School stu dents and staff will vol unteer for service projects throughout the community. Community and civic proj ects will be the focus of this day. Mustang Mop Up first began in 2007. Crane-Simpson has a bachelor’s of education degree in special education and a master’s in curriculum and instruction from the University of Idaho. She is currently working on her doctorate degree in educational leadership at Lewis and Clark College. The Sperry Street bridge removal project will not begin until August but the City is working toward get ting the Sidewalk/Beautifi- cation projects out for bid and started before the end of June. All the concrete was donated by Miller and Sons, Labor was done by Vince and Don Alleman, and help from Mike.Dougherty and Fowler fam ily. The track team is grateful for the service and generous donations to help better the complex. - Contributed photo New CEO will join Morrow County Health District May 15 By April Sykes The Morrow County Health District Board has selected Daniel Grigg, from the Salem area, as the new CEO for the district. Grigg, currently the director of the Center for Patient Safety and Clini cal Effectiveness at Salem Hospital, accepted the of fer on Monday, said board Chair Larry Mills. Mills said that G rigg said he plans to take over the helm o f the district on May 15 and will move his family to Heppner sometime in June after school is out in Salem. Grigg and his wife have seven children, with five still at home. Employment terms in clude a $120,000 per year salary with three weeks paid vacation and up to $3,500 in moving expenses. Accord ing to Mills, Grigg and his family plan to move into the four-bedroom house owned by the district, at least for the time being. Heppner Ambulance resources and expenditures are included in the hospital budget. Mahoney said that the budget includes a five per cent increase to service rates for all departments, effective July 1. She added that she left a $50,000 community benefit grant to Columbia River Community Health Services in Boardman in the budget, however it had not yet been applied for. Mahoney presented the board a draft of large capital purchases and projects that have been requested for the fiscal years 2015-19.
