Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 13,2013 - THREE Bank of EO hosts successful wrestling tournament Heppner High School hosted the fifth annual BEO Invitational Wrestling Tour nament on Saturday, Feb. 2, with 17 teams represent ing Adrian, Crane. Culver, Elgin, Enterprise, Grant Union. Imbler, Irrigon, Jo seph, La Grande, Mac-Hi, North Lake, Pine Eagle, Riverside, Union and Wal lowa high schools compet ing at this increasingly popular wrestling event. La Grande took home the team champion trophy, with Mac-Hi placing second and Riverside taking home the third-place trophy. Heppner High’s Tim Nelson, wres tling at 195 pounds, was voted outstanding wrestler o f the tournament by the coaches. Adorned in easy-to-find gold t-shirts, over 20 BEO employees and community members volunteered to help at the tournam ent. The boys beat the Hus kies 44-40 in a physical game where both teams badly wanted the win. The Mustangs finished the 2012- 13 season 4-12 in the BMC for a three-way tie with Union and Enterprise for sixth place in the league... just out of the BMC district tournament. The Lady Mustangs won 56-27 over the Hus kies. They bounced back af ter the previous night’s loss to play well together as a team. Baily Bennett scored 15; Alana Wilson, 13; Blake Greenup, nine; and Emma Osmin, seven points for Heppner. The Mustangs finished with a 12-4 re cord, tied with Union and Pilot Rock for second in the BMC. The win/loss record among those three teams places them in fourth place going into the BMC district tournament. The Lady M ustangs will play Weston-McEwen at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, in the first round of district playoffs at Pendleton. Heppner was outscored in the second quarter 20-6, which proved to be the difference in the game. JC Putman led the Mustangs in scoring with 12 points and 8 rebounds in the 50-34 loss to the Outlaws. The Lady M ustangs lost a game they needed to win to be in contention for the district title and top seed in the Blue Mountain Conference district tourna ment. The Mustangs looked nervous in the first half. Turnovers and not getting the ball inside produced eight points after two quar ters, for a 22-8 score. Hep pner charged back into the contest in the third with an 18-5 run over the Outlaws. Starting the final frame, down by one point at 27- 26, the Mustangs let up defensively as the Outlaws pulled away for the 52-44 win. Baily Bennett scored 23 points and Alana Wilson put up 13 points for the Mustangs. Both Mustang varsity By Jordan Jones The Heppner girls and boys gave a great finish to the 2013 basketball ¿¿ason with a victory against El gin. As winter sports come to an end, the community will continue to have op portunities to support local baseball, softball and track players. This weeks’ senior is George Alexander Vincent Smith. His parents are Greg Smith and Lisa Nelson. Smith has four siblings, Grant, Matt, Ryan and Gen eviève Smith. Smith enjoys all food in general, but says his favorite color is blue. Smith participates in wres tling, and enjoys hanging out with his friends. After Smith graduates from Hep pner High School, he plans on going on a mission trip, and says he would like to go everywhere in the world. Chamber lunch meeting This winter, the Arbuckle Nordic Ski club was able to drive to the top of Coal Mine Hill, thanks to plowing done by Bruce Young Logging through a Stewardship Fuels Reduction Proj ect. Gaining the extra elevation gave the group more trails and closed roads on which to ski. This past weekend, the club had new snow on top of a good base...there’s still more than 40 inches of snow at the Arbuckle Snotel site.
