Top: Mustang Baily Bennett keeps control of the ball while being chased down by a pack of Bobcats during last Friday’s game. Bottom: Mustang Aidan Wright goes for the shot dur ing the game against the Union Bobcats. - Photos by Sandy Matthews Friday night basketball didn’t end as hoped for the varsity Lady M ustangs. In the contest, the Union Bobcats led through all four quarters of play. Heppner (8-3 Blue Mountain Con ference) defense gave up many uncontested looks at the hoop by the opponent. The Mustangs lost the con test 65-44. The Lady M ustangs seem to have hit a snag, losing twice in three con tests as the season winds down to the district tourna ment. T hey then traveled to Weston on Saturday to play the TigerScots. In th e b o y s ’ v a r sity game, the Mustangs avenged an earlier season loss to the Bobcats, win ning 58-42 on Friday. The Mustangs looked sharp in the win. Stephen Thompson led the Mustangs in scoring with 14 points. In Weston, the Lady M ustangs defeated the home team 51-46 for sole possession of second place in the BMC. Heppner didn't shoot well in the first half, falling behind by 12 at the half. The girls fought their way back into the contest, though; with a strong push in the last two minutes, they notched a win against a good Weston-McEwen team. The league’s final four games, which end Feb. 9, will certainly be exciting for the Lady Mustangs as they try to chase down the league-leading Enterprise team. It was a different story for the Heppner boys Satur day night, as the TigerScots eliminated the Mustangs from the post-season. The TigerScots pushed the ball hard in defeating the Mus tangs 56-20. H ep p n er w ill h o st Grant-Union on Friday; it will be senior night for both Mustang squads. ■v.< Top: Mustang senior Alex Smith bolds down an opponent while the ref looks on during a recent match.
