Pipes to swirl at Condon when Scots toast Robert Burns, heritage Planning is in progress for the 16,h annual Rob ert Bums Day celebration in Condon. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26, and will take place at the Condon Elks Lodge on Main Street beginning at 2 p.m. P ip ers, d ru m m ers, dancers and vocalists will come from Pendleton, Ar lington, Redmond, Bend, Portland, McMinnville and Carson, WA to help the Condon community cel ebrate its Scottish heritage on the 254th anniversary of the birth o f Scotland’s beloved Bard Robert Bums. The celebration is in its 16th year as an organized event, and has become a favorite w intertim e diversion at Condon. The ev en t featu res lively music from the “Old Country,” a traditional Scot tish meal of “haggis, neeps and tatties,” and anecdotes from the annuls of Scottish families who settled in the greater Gilliam County area in the mid-to-late 1800s. Some of the early-day Scottish settlers in the area included such names as Dunbar, Rattray, Duthie, Hardie, Stewart, Campbell, McFarlane, Geddes, Kyd, Patterson, Froman, Dysart, Spalding, Jamieson and Marshall—and there were many more who came to America after Scotland’s economy had collapsed. In the early days of set tlement in Gilliam County, an organization known as the C aledonian Society was formed by those who arrived early, to help fel low Scots still arriving find work and housing. In later years, in the 1950s and early 1960s, celebra tions to honor the early Scottish settlers were held in Condon, John Day, Day- ville and other areas where Scots settled. As the Scot tish pioneers passed away, the celebrations honoring them seemed to fade away as well. The now 16-year-old tradition o f honoring the manager o f Bucknum’s re garding an unknown prob lem. The written documentation of the area’s Scottish families w ill become a valuable genealogical and research com pilation o f the area and its people. Those who attend are invited to take a run at the podium to talk of their family’s earlier years. The celebration is held each year on, or near, the birth date o f the famed Scottish poet, the immortal Robert Burns, Scotland’s endearing Poet Laureate who was bom on Jan. 25, 1759. The afternoon, and into the evening, is spent with lively readings and recitations of Robert Bums and other poetry, music of the country, the pipes and drums, snippets of letters and family histories. Also included is a shortbread baking contest, which of fers a host of unique prizes, and an ample supply o f shortbread. The public is invited to the event.
