Richard started his educa tion at the Rhea Creek School, a one room school house in Heppner. His family later moved to Condon, OR when he was in the fourth Grade and he completed his schooling there. Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1959 and spent 2 Vi years in the Transporta tion Unit in Germany until he was honorably discharged. He married Klara Schumacher, a pretty little German girl, in 1961. After his stint in the service he came back to Condon and worked for Art Dalzell for a couple of years, then went to work on Swede Carlson’s ranch for 15 years. In the winter of 1978, Richard started working for Bob Ma honey on the HM Ranch, and after 34 years, is still part of the HM family. Richard’s wife Klara also worked for the HM Ranch for many years. Richard and Klara have two sons, Jim Kin zer who lives in Portland, OR and Bobby, who is deceased. Richard has been a member of the Wrangler’s Riding Club, Willow Creek Grange and is still an active member of BPOE # 358. When Richard was young, he competed in the bareback riding event at the rodeos. He says “I never made any money doing this, but had a lot of fun.” In his later years he competed in both the team roping and calf roping events. Richard loved the ranch rop- ings at the Murray’s, Dough erty’s, Steagall’s, Evans’ and Mahoney’s. “These family rop- ings were so much fun, just a good time with potlucks af terwards.” Richard also com peted for the Morrow County Amateur Calf Roping Saddle for many years winning sec ond one year and third an other. Richard said “Then the toughs came and I retired.” This quiet, quick wit- ted, hard working behind the scenes is loved by everyone who has had the pleasure to 2 5 + Y e a rs o f S u s ta in a b ility H e rm is to n O R Pasco. At the rodeos he was kind of hard to catch up with because he was either helping load rough stock in the chutes or at the other end of the arena sorting the calves so they were in the right order for the ropers. Richard also worked the grounds before the Wrangler Playdays and then just did whatever needed to be done. Richard was award ed an “Appreciation Award” for his hard work from the Morrow County Rodeo Com mittee in 1979. Even though Richard doesn’t work behind the scenes anymore, he is an avid spectator. He never miss es a parade or the Morrow County Rodeoand still gets a big kick out of watching the young cowboys and cowgirls compete. Richard says, “They are our future and I really en joy watching them have fun.” D o b y n s P e s t C o n tro l 541 422-7180 - K ic k u p y o u r h e e ls , h a v e a w o n d e r fu l tim e ! * Residential *Commercial Serving Morrow County f o r over 5 0 years.
