Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 30,2012 - THREE A View from the Hill By Doris Brosnan Residents and staff at Willow Creek Terrace view volunteerism as an impor tant component to life on the hill, and almost every day of the week includes the routine and welcomed visits from area volunteers. This month has also brought ad ditional volunteer guests to entertain and to work. On last week’s “Mus tang Mop-Up” day, a group of 10 seventh-graders put in a full day of hard work with their teacher-assistant, Jeanne C ollins, to help spruce up the Terrace. Man ager George Naims compli mented the workers as an other "great group” that left behind greatly-appreciated and significant changes. Having the HHS choir return on the S“1 with an- other entertaining selection of songs was a treat, and the residents loved the concert that the lone school choir brought them on the 16th. The Terrace staff is good at thinking up en tertainment, so the month has also held many laughs and activities provided in- house. Limerick Day, on May 12, is one example, as some residents enjoyed reading limericks, trying to remember some from years ago, and laughing at Naims when she started a limerick and too late re membered the off-colored ending rhyme. Laughs were plentiful at exercises the morning o f Dance-Like- a-Chicken Day, the 14,h. Between the Elmo doll that dances like a chicken and the staff members who demonstrated their exper- tise, the residents couldn't decide which was more entertaining. Last week was National Backyard Games Week, so residents had daily op portunities to participate in “outside games,” played inside because of inclem ent weather. Players have noticed that manipulating a ball with a parachute takes team work, golf takes indi vidual finesse, and "bolo- toss,” which involves toss ing two golf balls connected with a string toward three bars, is difficult to master. The community on the hill celebrated Cinco de Mayo w ith decorations and a Mexican dinner. With a big "thank you” and a fruit pizza, it recognized the hospital nursing staff and the home-health nurs ing staff during National Nurses Week. M other’s Day was a busy day of visiting with guests; Brother’s Day will probably be a quieter day of discussion and reflection as residents think about their siblings; M emorial Day will surely see more visitors at the Terrace and an oppor tunity for some residents to reminisce. M arge Burgess will get in on these and other coming activities after re turning to her apartment earlier this week. Marge has been missed during her two months away. R esidents w ill miss their respite visitor Nona Grace, who completed her rehab stint and returned hom e. B efore leaving, however, Nona shared her birthday with her temporary neighbors and had about 10 friends in for that afternoon check o ut these o f celebration. Two days later, on the 9th, Lois Allyn and the other residents cel ebrated her 84th birthday. A few items from the Terrace garden have be come part of these birthday lunches and other meals, as volunteer spinach and let tuce complement the salads. Bud Batty and Naims have completed the planting of the garden, and Bud checks almost daily for signs of growth. Other sources of garden harvest and foods have come from Jerald and Leann Rea, George and Myrna Seiler, John and Dorothy Edwards, Jack and Jo Meligan, and the Odd Fellows— more evidence o f volunteer support that is so important to Willow Creek Terrace, support that residents and staff view with fondness. Bunco fundraiser for Relay for Life A Bunco fundraiser to benefit Relay for Life will be held Thursday, June 14, at 6 p.m. at the lone Legion Hall. Entry fee is $ 10 per person; participants are also asked to bring a $5 gift for raffle that night.
