"Oregon's Promise"to provide independence, dignity and choice to seniors and people with disabilities, was on the line— the bottom line. But thanks to great concern, a lot of hard work and some prudent choices by legislators in both parties, severe cuts were avoided and the core of a program that has long been a model of humanity and efficiency has been preserved in the short run. Members of 22 organizations in the Campaign for Oregon's Seniors & People with Disabilities are especially grateful to Representatives Peter Buckley of Ashland, Jean Cowan of Newport, Michael Dembrow of Portland, Tim Freeman of Roseburg, Vic Gilliam of Silverton, Bruce Hanna of Roseburg, Val Hoyle of West Eugene, John Huffman of The Dalles, Bob Jensen of Pendleton, Dennis Richardson of Central Point, Amie Roblan of Coos Bay and Greg Smith of Heppner and Senators Alan Bates of Medford, Peter Courtney of Salem, Richard Devlin of Tualatin, Laurie Monnes Anderson of Gresham and Jackie Winters of Salem. Not all programs for seniors and people with disabilities were left intact and some cuts will be hard on individuals who depend upon these services. But much of the long term care system was preserved by legislators who agree with us that given the sacrifices so many Oregonians are being forced to make, government should run as efficiently as possible. We're proud of that and grateful to them. 22 o rg a n iza tio n com m itted to seniors and people w ith disabilities in Oregon www.oregonspromise.org
