FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 21,2012 A View from the Hill By Doris Brosnan This winter weath er and life on the Hill share one characteristic: both have been, at least part ly, unpredictable. Though residents and staff do look forw ard to the routines they can count on each day o f the week, they know they should also be ready for variables. This might be compared to viewing sunshine and 60+ degrees one day and looking out at snow and 36 degrees the next day. Terrace residents continue to appreciate the many volunteers provid ing routine activities that include bingo and other games, piano music, read ing of the Gazette-Times, crafts, and book exchanges. The daily exercise-and- discuss program and the Saturday-matinee movie also add comfortable ex pectations for the residents and staff. The unpredictable fills in the remainder of the calendar. Who can predict the madcap celebrations that the “someone” who researches such things can come up with in a given month? This month, for instance, one that a resi dent with a sweet tooth could look forward to was “Oatmeal Cookie Day” on March 18. Visitors might be surprised to see more than usual activity at the Terrace on March 22, which will be “As Young as You Feel Day.” Imaginations might run wild on March 26 because the feature will be “Make Your Own Holi day.” How the Terrace ob serves these special days oftentim es brings some chuckles. Some special days are thought-provoking. The emphasis on March 1 would be a good idea every day and might contribute to more world peace; it was “ World Compliment Day,” followed on the 2nd by “World Day of Prayer.” The entire week of March 4-10 was an observation of “Celebrate Your Name,” so the staff researched the meaning of each resident’s name, and everyone is help ing to create wall and door hangings that feature the nam es and their m ean ings. (Something new for visitors to look for.) This type of interest by the staff members is why the March 9, “Employees Apprecia tion Day,” was special on the Hill. The 7* observed the 79,h “birthday" of the game of Monopoly, which enticed a few resident- players. and the Girl Scouts organization was 100 on March 12, which led to some reminiscing. “Mom and Pop Business Day” on March 29 will probably stimulate some interesting discussions, as will “Doc tors Day” on March 30. Over the past two years, residents have oc casionally discussed wind mill projects in Morrow County, usually during the Wednesday readings of the Gazette-Times’ related arti cles and letters to the editor. Suzanne Jepsen organized a field trip to the Matteson Farms project on March 6 for the 11 residents, who enjoyed an up-close look at some turbines. Leann and Jerald Rea went on the trip, also, and Leann offered her personal and political knowledge of the projects in the county. T his m onth has also featured two musical groups led by Joe Lindsay. The junior high school band played some great tunes for the residents and, on the next day, the residents enjoyed the Heppner High School choir, also under Lindsay’s leadership. This young man was also involved in the de velopment of the dramatic production at the Catholic Parish Hall on Thursday evening. Five residents enjoyed this traditional be ginning of the “Wee Bit O’ Ireland” celebration in Hep pner. Some residents also braved the cool weather to watch the Great Green Parade on Saturday.
