Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 28,2011 Lady Cards split play at Cougar Classic The lone Lady Car dinals split their games at the Country Christian Cou gar Classic in Molalla on December 19 and 20 with a com e-from -behind win over the hosts on Monday followed by a shellacking at the hands o f McKenzie on Tuesday. Country Christian put a tall team on the court; the Cards were without their post, JoAnna Patton, who missed the trip for family reasons. In the first quarter, CC controlled the flow o f the game and jum ped out to a commanding 18-4 lead. The Cardinal coaches made a few adjustments, and lone pulled to within two at the half, 20-18. In the third quarter, the Cards tuned up their press and, behind the hot shooting o f Stacee Hal- vorsen, grabbed the lead for good. At the end o f three, lone led 36-29 and rolled on to the 44-34 win. Stacee Halvorsen was the leading scorer for the third game in a row with 16 points. Shadow K en drick had 11 and Collette Cason had nine. Mary Riet- mann was the leader on the boards with 12 rebounds, and also had five steals. Shadow Kendrick notched a double-double with ten rebounds to go along with her double-digit points. She and Makenna Ramos also had five steals. “ They [C ountry Christian] are one o f the contenders in the C asco League,” said Coach Mike G arrett. “The kids did a really good job o f holding them to 34 points.” He noted that Sta cee Halvorsen was a “spark plug” for the team, coming off the bench to score 16 points. He also said that Mary Rietmann and Shad ow Kendrick did a good job o f slowing Country Chris tian’s 6 ’0 post player after the first quarter. D ay tw o o f th e Cougar Classic pitted the Cards, who had just climbed to the number one spot in the OSAA power rankings, against an experienced and tall McKenzie team. “ We knew going in they were going to be tough,” said Garrett. Heppner girls’ varsity takes win over Imbler 27-26; boys trail 49-43 The Mustang bas ketball teams traveled to Imber on December 20 to play the Panthers. The girls’ squad is now 3-4 overall after defeating Im ber in a close contest that went down to the buzzer, 27-26. The Mustangs, up by three at the half, lost m om entum in the th ird quarter, outscored by the Panthers 11-4. Turnovers were abound on both teams, w ith the M ustangs g iv ing up the ball 34 tim es throughout the game. In the fourth quar ter Heppner found them selves down by only two points w ith 30 seconds remaining, when two free throws from an Imbler foul gave Alana Wilson a chance to tie the game, along with a Panther technical foul called w hich added tw o tries from the line. Wilson hit three o f four to give the Mustangs the lead by one. The Panthers received the ball with five seconds left in reg u latio n but could not find the hoop in time. The Heppner team fought to the finish on the court. They continue to struggle offensively, shooting nine for 34 from the field. Stats: W ilson-11, G re e n u p -8 , C o llin s - 4 , R auch-2, H aguew ood-2. The M ustangs were 9-17 from the line. In the bo y s’ var sity gam e, the M ustangs found them selves trailing throughout the game. Scor ing only three points in the third quarter and down by 14 to begin the final quar ter, the M ustangs battled back to within two points, but couldn’t overtake the Panthers, falling 49-43. Im b le r had fo u r plays in double figures in scoring. The Mustangs are now 4-3 overall. Stats: Orr-17, Pranger-10, Day-7, Thomp son-5, Bowles-4. Heppner hit five three-pointers and were six for 11 from the stripe. Heppner will host a Christmas tourney Dec. 29-30 with games starting at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
