FO U R - Heppner G azette-Tim es, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, November 9,2011 lone wins last game, defeats Knights 52-30 By Paula Emmel lone Cardinal foot ball played its last game of the season this past Friday night in Condon. It was freezing cold night, with frost on the helmets of the players and on the ground. Both teams suffered some injuries, taking players off the held during their final game. Kaleb Dumler o f lone suffered a knee in jury and Jacob Rietmann o f Condon was knocked out and taken by the am bulance. N either player returned to the game. “Our offensive line did an outstanding job. We amassed 557 yards on the ground with solid blocking up front and some excellent running by Micah Still man and Evan Rietmann. Despite the cold weather and playing in Condon, the team played with intensity and responded well in some tough situations on defense. Early in the game, we held Condon at the goal line for four plays inside the four yard line. We held them again with seconds left in the half when Condon was awarded one more play at the one-yard line with one second on the clock,” said Coach Stan Weiper. Thomas scored two touchdowns and one pat for 14 points in the first half for Condon/Wheeler, lone answered the battle cry by consistently scoring touchdowns and converting the pat every few minutes or so during the first half. Evan Rietmann scored on a 53-yard run and a 79-yard rush, and received a pass for two points on the first conversion—all in the first quarter—for 14 points. During the second quarter of play, Rietmann scored two more touch downs on a 10-yard run and a 33-yard run. Adam Collin converted the first pat for two points on a pass from Zac Orem. The Condon Knight, Thomas, scored another touchdown. Much to the Knight’s surprise, Kirk Haguewood managed to come up with an inter ception on the seven-yard line, with just 13.55 sec onds left on the clock, and Micah Stillman ran it back 93 yards for a touchdown on the following play, run ning much of the field all by himself. That brought the half-time score to 34- 14, lone. lo n e ’s Rietmann scored a touchdown on a 76-yard run, and Micah Stillman turned a four-yard run into a touchdown, for 12 points during the first eight minutes of play in the second half. Condon wasn’t about to quit. The seniors can be proud of their accom plishments and the younger players should look forward to continued success in the future. One particular play to note was an intercep tion made by Kirk Hague wood at the seven-yard line. Whereby, on the next play Micah ran 93 yards for a touchdown. Although our offense played very well, it was our defense that came up with huge plays at critical times to preserve the victory.” lone defense was supported by the tough playing of Luke Emmel, who filled in for injured Ka leb Dumler on both offense and defense. He played well, utilizing his tackling skills. Omar Juarez’s kick ing ability proved strong for his long and accurate kicks, despite the cold weather. Evan Rietmann and Micah Stillman finished the season strong, as evidenced by the scoring. They scored all the game points except for Adam Collin’s two points. And of course... the Cardi nal defensive players, who held the line of scrimmage many times, are some tough dudes. They deserve recog nition for their hard work this season. They include Omar Juarez, Zac Orem, Adam Collin, Tim Emmel, Sam Irons, Kirk Hague wood, Jordan Synder, Mi cah Stillman, Trent Can non, Evan Rietmann. Luke Emmel and Kaleb Dumler.
