U.S.P.S. 240-420 Heppner High School homecoming week Sept. 19- 23 Obituary 90th birthday party planned for Mary Wright Dorotha Barratt- Knecht, longtime Oregon State University booster and co-founder of the Corvallis Assistance League, died o f natural causes on Septem ber 8, 2011, in Corvallis, Oregon. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Sep tember 17, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Good Samari tan. Dorotha was bom April 7, 1925, in Hepp ner, Oregon. She was the daughter of David Wilson, a mercantile owner, and Lucille Elder. She lettered four years in tennis at Hep pner High School and then continued her education at University of Oregon, graduating with a bach elor of science and nurs ing degree in 1947. She married her high school sweetheart, James Barratt, Jr., on June 16, 1946. The two were married for over 50 years until his death in 1998. They spent 25 years involved with OSU while Jim was employed as ath letic director. Together, they supported countless stu dent athletes through their involvement with Oregon State University and their establishment of a scholar ship fund for athletics. She enjoyed travel ing all over the world, while being managing partners of Away Travel and owners of Jim Barratt Tours for nine years. Dorotha married Ed Knecht in 1999. They shared enthu siasm for Oregon State University athletics. She val ued and enjoyed all sports and was an avid ten n is Kaechl player and golfer. Her time was spent with the Red Hat Society, Assistance League, Birth day Girl Clubs and Bridge Club Marathons. She loved the outdoors. She was most proud of her role as a moth er, finding it important to give her children love and care. She valued happiness in relationships, her profes- sional accomplishments and providing for others. S u r v iv o r s i n clude: her husband Ed ward Knecht; daughters Brenda Kerber and Ja net King; grandchildren, Shannon Altenhofen, Ali Cammelletti, David Ker ber, and Katy Curtis; and great grandchild Emma Alten hofen. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, dona tions may be made to the Jim and Dorotha Barratt Scholarship Fund in care of the OSU Foundation at 850 SW 35th Street, Corvallis, Oregon 97333. Neighborhood Center helps meet needs in the community The Neighborhood Center is a nonprofit orga nization that is available to assist/supplement needs in our community. The center provides food baskets to anyone with limited re sources, including seniors meeting federal guidelines. The center receives donated items from the community and then makes those items accessible back to the com munity. All donated items that are available are new or gently used, and may be purchased for a minimal fee. These funds are used to cover operating expenses of the center. Merchandise that is presently available is a variety of formal dresses/ suits (homecoming) house wares, bedding, shoes, paperback/books, sweats, hooded sweatshirts, blous es, shirts, dresses, coats and many miscellaneous articles. “Inventory changes daily so drop by frequently and check out what is new at the center,” said a spokes person. :”e will be starting our new promotion, a 25 cent rack, beginning Thurs day, September 22.
