Oregon lawmakers extend tribal police authority tinue pursuing suspects who leave tribal land and to take action when a crime is com mitted in front of them. Under the measure, tribal police officers would be granted limited police authority if they obtain cer tification from the state De partment of Public Safety Standards and Training and the tribe agrees to certain rules of insurance, tort li ability and evidence. The Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association was the most vocal opponent o f the measure, saying it would open the door to law suits and give tribal officers authority off the reservation while continuing to restrict authority of non-tribal of ficers on reservations. Rep. Greg Smith was one of three Republi cans in the Oregon House o f R epresentatives who voted to give tribal police the same off-reservation authority as non-tribal of ficers during a time-span from 2013 to 2015. Smith, Andy Olson of Albany and Matt Wing- ard of Wilsonville joined all 30 House Democrats in approving the measure in a 33-25 vote. The Sen ate approved the measure 19-10; it now goes to Gov. John Kitzhaber, who says he supports the bill.
