HeppnerGazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, June22,2011 -SEVEN F irst free spray day a success ADMINISTRATORS HONORED The Morrow Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) and the Natural Resources Conser vation Service hosted the first annual “Free Spray Day” on Friday, June 17 at the Heppner City Park. The turnout was good, as 73 individuals lined up for the pre-mixed herbicide Speedzone*, la beled for control o f broa- dleaf weeds in tu rf and ornamental areas. Dennis Newman, a licensed pesticide applica tor, volunteered to mix and distribute 170 gallons of the herbicide. All the par ticipants were entered in a drawing to win a backpack sprayer donated by Wilbur Ellis; the lucky winner was Becky Doherty. Aside from getting free herbicide to jumpstart their weed-control efforts, those who attended learned how weed control is important to watershed health and water quality. Boardman City Park will be staked out for 20 teams to vie for first, second and third awards for barbequed, smoked or sauced pork ribs. The stan dard entry fee is $80 per team, which includes four racks of ribs. An additional two racks may be requested with a $ 100 submission. All proceeds support special ized training and supplies for fire district volunteers and community public edu cation and safety awareness materials. Also elected were Steve Rhea, secretary/treasurer; Molly Rhea, tailtwister; Joyce Shepherd, membership chairman and Jimmy Fitcher, lion tamer. In addition to new officers, the club also discussed its annual fireworks sales, rifle raffle and rodeo program sales, all projects the club uses as fundraiser to aid people needing sight and hearing help, and to fund other community projects. The district must follow all NSLP regulations regarding free and reduced price pro cess, financial management of the nonprofit school food service, civil rights and confidentiality procedures, An informational meeting regarding Tele- Health for rural veterans will be held July 6 in Board- man and Heppner. The meetings will be in Board- man at 9:30 a.m. at the Port o f M orrow C onference Center and in Heppner at 1:30 p.m. at the Heppner Chamber of Commerce. Tele-Health chang es the location where health care services are routinely provided. Meeting attend ees will see a short video explaining Tele-Health for rural veterans and will be able to visit with local care provider Daniel Nalep- ka. They will also get the chance to discuss local opportunities for veterans needing medical care close to home or in their own home. The VA uses health information, disease man agement and Tele-Health technologies to target care/ case management, thereby facilitating access to care and improving the health of veterans. The meetings will be presented by: Brian Westfield, director of the Walla Walla VA Medical Center and Daniel Nalepka o f PA-C, La Grande VA CBOC (Community Based Outreach Clinic). They are hosted by Morrow County Veterans Services. Controlled hunt draw results now online Hunters who ap plied for a 2011 fall con trolled hunt can find out if they drew the tag online at ODFW's My Hunter Infor mation page. Hunters will need with results was also mailed to all hunters who applied for a controlled hunt. H unters need to purchase their tags no later than the day before the earliest hunt period begins.
