The Advisory Committee will meet April 25, in Moro -Continuedfrom PACE FOUR From Suffering to Glory lone crowns Gates, LaRue as prom royalty In the accounts o f the suffering and death o f Je sus, there are many people around him - the Chief Priests, Pilate, Scribes, Pharisees, Barabhas, soldiers, Simon of Cyrene, Veronica , the Centurion, John an Apostle and Mary his Mother. He, o f course, is the central figure as he comes to complete his mission on earth. He has worked miracles, made prophesies, told parables. But now is the time for the sacrifice of his life for the salva tion o f mankind. “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (Jn. 15:13). Many clamored for him and proclaimed his praises as he en tered Jerusalem on that occasion. People had often been astounded at his words, but soon they would reject him. They cried out, “Hosanna to the Son o f David,” but a few days later they yelled, “Crucify him.” Pilate had him scourged, and the soldiers crowned him with a crown of thorns. Then they nailed him to the cross. His response: “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do” (Lk. 23:34). What mercy! To the penitent thief: “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Lk. 23:43). What compas sion! To his Mother and St. John: “Behold your son.... behold your mother” (Jn. 19:26-27). No wonder that the Centurion could exclaim, “Truly this man was the Son of God” (Mk. 15:39). Even though that is a record o f his infinite love for mankind, the account does not end there. He rose from the dead and appeared to the Apostles, to two disciples who were going to Emmaus, to Mary Magdalen, to Peter and to some 500 others. So strong was this evidence that St. Paul would later say, “If Christ has not been raised, lone seniors Mary Gates and Kevin LaRue were crowned your faith is v ain...” (1 Cor. 15:17). No one knows quite how it happened. Jesus had been murdered and sealed up tight in a tomb on Friday. By Sunday morning, the tomb was empty. There had been plenty o f witnesses to the crucifixion, but no one saw the resurrection taking place. There was just an empty tomb where there should have been a dead body, and life-changing encounters with a living Jesus, still bear ing the marks of his Friday ordeal. It’s hard to explain, or understand. It’s truly a mystery, and yet it’s true. Jesus rose. Death couldn’t hold him. Because the tomb was empty, the grieving friends of Jesus learned that his story had not come to an end after all; it was only beginning. Instead o f death, shat tered dreams, and empty promises, they discovered that the promises were even greater than they had imagined. Sorrow turned into joy because new life had emerged out o f death— first for Jesus, but not only for Jesus. His life means new life for all who believe in him. As friends o f a living Jesus, w e’re not confined to the dark tomb o f human error and limitation; our identity isn’t defined just by family ties or occupation, by tragedy or hopelessness. When the light of Christ shines into our dark places, we are made new. Even the things that look like endings can be recognized as new beginnings, filled with new life and hope, full o f possibility because Jesus has set us free. We’ve been freed from the burden of our failures and all the mistakes o f our past. We’ve been freed from the illusion that we can save ourselves and win God’s love by being good enough. We’ve been given the gift of new life in Christ— not just eternal life after we die, but abundant life now. That tomb is still empty. Jesus still lives. And so can we. Rev. Katy Anderson Hope Lutheran Church and All Saints Episcopal Church Where you can come and hear the rest o f the story on Sundays at 10.
