Willow Creek Country Club to offer beginning golf class Willow Creek Country Club will be offering a beginning golf class for people with limited or no prior golfing experience. The class is limited to 12 students per session and registration will be on a first come, first serve basis. The fee is $30 for six 1 Vi hour lessons. The fee includes temporary membership in WCCC for non-members and unlimited practice play for the duration o f the class. The class fee will be waived for family members o f WCCC. A half-price 2011 membership is available for students who were not WCCC members in 2010. Each student must have a basic set of clubs in cluding a putter, 5, 7, and 9 irons, and a wood. Balls and tees will be provided by the class. The first session will be March 15, 22, and 29; April 5, 12, and 19 from 5-6:30 p.m. The second session will be April 26, May 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31 from 5:30-7 p.m. John Edmundson will be the instructor. Friends o f the Heppner Library recognize Volunteer o f the Year Velena “Maxine” Schmidt Velena “ M axine” Schm idt, 72, o f Heppner d ie d T u e s day, F e b r u a r y 16, 2011, at her h o m e . No services are p lan n e d at this time. She w a s b o r n Velena N o v e m b e r “Maxine” 1 0 , 193 8 Schmidt at Fos sil, Oregon, the daughter o f C laren ce and L aR ue Smith Medlock. Her family moved several times during her younger years. In 1949 she attended a one room school at Cam p 5 which was owned by Kinzua Cor poration. In 1955 the family moved back to Camp 5 from where she attended Wheeler County High School in Fos sil, graduating in 1957. Maxine met Rich ard (Dick) Schmidt o f Fos sil in 1958. The couple married that year in Kinzua, Oregon. In 1962 Dick was transferred from the Kinzua Pine Mill to the Heppner m ill. They lived in Hep pner until 1978 when they St. Pat's is coming! The next lunch will be M arch 18 at Service Creek at 11:30 a.m. The group will be meeting the third Friday o f the month with the exception of June as that is the Kinzua re union. lone American Legion & Auxiliary making plans for Perimeter of Flags original flag at home, or for any reason does not have a flag, another casket flag can be purchased and flown in memory o f the veteran. A one time fee o f $50 will be requested to sponsor a pole on which to fly their flag. Any donations will be gladly accepted to be used specifically for the perimeter o f flags project. The position is currently filled by Molly Rill. One person has currently filed for the position. The deadline to file is March 17 with the Umatilla County Elections Office. In the mid 1960s he worked as general manager o f Sunriver Properties in Bend. He then was assistant to the m ayor o f Renton, Washington. He th en becam e d ire c to r o f the M orrow County Planning D epart ment, a position he held for 20 years. Upon retiring, he was elected commissioner for the Port o f Morrow in Boardman. He married Colleen Abrahamson and started a family in the mid 1950s. In 1973, he and his second wife, Rose Marie, married and lived mostly in Board- man and Irrigon. Mr. Seeger is sur vived by: children Martius “ D ean e” S eeger III and M olly S eeger; ste p c h il dren Rod, Scott and Cris Paulson; and three grand daughters. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Deane and Emily Seeger; brother Hartley “Hart” Seeger; and beloved wife Rose Marie Seeger. Bums Mortuary of Hermiston was in charge of arrangements. Kinzua lunch group meets Rust named to EOU dean’s list The lone A m eri can Legion and Auxiliary is proceeding with plans for the Perimeter of Flags that will be displayed each Memorial Day at the Ionr* High View Cemetery. The idea is to allow the fam ilies o f deceased military veterans to fly the flag that was draped over the casket on every Memo rial Day weekend. Those flags will be identified with the nam e o f the veteran and the lone Post will be entrusted with the perpetual care o f m aintaining and storing o f those flags when not in use. A Martius celebration “Deane” o f life took Seeger place at the Port of Morrow building in Boardman. Mr. Seeger was bom May 9, 1930, along with twin brother Hartley in Bellingham, Washington, to Emily and Martius “Deane” Seeger Sr. The Seeger fam ily relocated to Eugene, where he graduated from E ugene H igh School in 1948. Enlisting in the Air Force in* 1951, he served in the Korean War until his honorable discharge. He graduated from the Univer Martius “Deane” sity o f Oregon. He w as the first city manager o f Union City, Seeger Jr. C alifo rn ia He m oved to M artius “ D eane” Washington, D.C., to work Seeger Jr., 80, o f Irrigon for the Department of Hous died Wednesday, February ing and Urban D evelop bought and moved to their 40 acres 18 miles south of Heppner where she contin ued to live until her death. She worked at Pio neer M em orial H ospital for 21 years until ill health forced her to retire. Maxine enjoyed reading, camping, crossw ord puzzles crafts o f all kinds and her grand- kids. She is survived by: her husband Dick Schmidt o f Heppner; daughter Robin Holbrook and her husband Glenn o f Pendleton; son, Richard Schm idt and his wife Pam o f Heppner; sis ters, Pat Kidder of Dexter, Oregon, Jean Fountain of Eugene, Oregon; brother, Ron M edlock o f Spring- field , O regon; and four grandchildren.
