Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 9,2011 Mustang wrestlers finish fourth at Bank of Eastern Oregon Invitational The Heppner Mus tangs wrestling team com peted on Saturday at the Bank of Eastern Oregon In vitational in Heppner. The tournament included nine teams from Adrian, Crane, G ra n t U nion, H eppner, Imbler, Irrigon, Mac Hi, Riverside, and Union. Riv erside took home the team championship trophy, fol lowed by Crane in second and Mac Hi in third. The Mustangs finished fourth. Sophomore Junior Spaulding, a new comer to the team, qualified for the tournament championship bout at 119 pounds in his first high school tournament by pinning his opponent less than one minute into the semi final match. He finished the tournament in second place. S e n io r J a rre id M iller, ranked senior in Oregon 2A at 130 pounds, was the second M ustang to qualify for the tourna m ent cham pionship, also by pinning his challenger in the semi finals. He faced eighth ranked Martin Her rera from Riverside in the finals. Although Miller had previously beaten Herrera, he was taken by surprise by an arm spin throw early in the match and couldn’t fight his way out, giving up a pin with 13 seconds left in the first round. Six Mustang wres tlers qualified for the conso lation championships and a chance at a bronze medal. F re sh m a n Ja re d Lemmon, ranked fourth in Oregon 2A at 112 pounds, conceded the cham pion ship semi finals due to in jury default and faced third ranked Thom as O ’Toole from Crane in the consola tion championship. Lem mon won by a major deci sion 12-4. Matthew just missed qualifying for the tourna m ent cham pionship bout with a narrow 8-10 loss in the semi finals. He finished 4-1 for the day with four pins, scored the most team points for H eppner, and went on to claim the conso lation championship. Shane Miles (119), A lex Sm ith (1 2 5 ), Earl Propheter (135), and An drew Bara (152) each fin ished fourth in their w eight classes. Smith made it to the tournament champion ship semifinals by pinning a ranked opponent from Mac Hi in the bracket quarterfi nals. He lost in the semi fi nals 8-16 to a returning state champion from Imbler and ended the tournament with a 2-2 record. Bara also had a 2-2 tournament record on his way to fourth place. Garrett Gibbs won two and lost two and fin ished in fifth place at 171 pounds. The wrestling team competes in their last regu lar season tournam ent on Saturday at the Pine Eagle to u rn am en t in H alfw ay, then moves on to the special district 4 championships in Wallowa on February 18 and 19. The top two wres tlers from each weight class at the district tournament qualify for the state cham pionships held in Portland’s M em orial C o liseu m on February 25 and 26. Lady Mustangs take 52-42 win over Bobcats On Saturday, Feb ruary 5, Heppner played their second road game of the w eekend against the Union Bobcats. The Lady Mustangs beat the Bobcats 52-42. T he L ady M u s tangs came out playing very good. The press and press break were both working w ell for H eppner, scor ing 19 points in the first quarter for a 27-22 lead at the half. The Bobcats found their game in the second half, chipping away at Hep- pner’s lead. By the fourth quarter, with six minutes to go, they had tied Heppner 38-38. At the four minute mark the Lady M ustangs had gone on an eight point run to pull ahead 46-38 and hung on for the 52-42 win. S e n io r T a ig h le r Dougherty had a great game scoring 20 with many steals from her pressure defense. Bailey Bennett scored 16 points in the w in and Mag gie Collins had 10 points for Heppner. Going into the end o f the season with a Friday game in Irrigon and the last home game Saturday night against Stanfield for senior night, it should get very in te restin g for H eppner basketball as they play for district seeding. Cardinals beat Condon/Wheeler 49-40 By Paula Emmel lone continued to win, m oving into Febru ary and beating Condon/ Wheeler 49-40. “We did not play well, but it was a win,: said Coach Dennis Stefani. “We need to make sure and make teams play to our tempo.” Zac O rem m ade 15 o f the team points. Ste ven Holland added eight m ore. Adam C ollin shot for seven points and Tanner Rietmann and Omar Juarez added six each. Evan Ri etmann scored four points and M arco Juarez scored three. Holland led the attack o f the boards with seven rebounds. T. R ietm ann had six, E. Rietmann added four, while Orem and O. Juarez each grabbed three, and rounding it out was Collin with two and Micah Stillman with one rebound. Orem was the thief of the night with three steals. T. Rietmann got two and Mar co Juarez and Collin each had one. Orem also led the team with four assists. T. Rietmann gave three and H olland and Collin each gave one. The blocked shot king was Holland with five. - FIVE lone continues winning streak on the road By Paula Emmel lone continued its w inning streak on the road, winning 97-36 over Central Christian. This was a fun game to play and watch. The lone Cardinals shared the court, with all the play ers getting some playing time. . All 12 team mem bers scored in this game and contributed to the team stats. Micah Stillman and Tanner Rietmann led the points with 15 each. Zac Orem put in 12 points, and Steven Holland and Kirk H aguew ood each added 10 points. Evan Rietmann gained nine more, Marco Juarez got eight, Adam Collin and Alex Rietmann had six each, and Om ar Juarez, Luke Emmel and Kaleb Dumler each put in two points. The team gave Holland some time to try out his dunk shot by shifting their positions to put him in the outlet position. He managed to make a couple one handed shots. Then the team decided to have fun in the fourth quarter and set a goal of making it to one hundred with just minutes to play and their score at 72. Tanner R ietm ann stole five times, Orem had three steals, Collin, E. Ri etmann, and Stillman stole twice, with K. Haguewood, D um ler, Em m el, and A. Rietm ann each grabbing one steal. Holland blocked three more shots and Orem blocked once. Coach Stefani com mented, “This was a great game for everyone to get some playing time before district. It was nice to see everyone get to score.” lone made this the 10th consecutive win. They play Helix this Friday and Dufur on Saturday to finish up the regular season, lone is currently first in the Big Sky Division East Confer ence. But lone came alive and outscored the Cougars 23- 7, in the second period to take the lead at the half with 35-18. With the 57-50 win, lone moved ahead o f Echo in the team standings 9-2. L ead sco rer was Adam Collin for the night with 19 points. Tanner Ri etmann turned in 12 more. Zac Orem added eight and Evan Rietmann added seven points to the board.
