They continued to make 12 points in the third and 22 in the fourth. The JV team gave them a rest during the game and the Cardinals finished with smiles to go around, finish ing a clean sweep. Z a c O re m h a d a good night m aking 16 p oints, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. F o llow ing close behind was Adam Collin with 15 points, four rebounds, and one assist and a steal. Tan ner Rietmann also played w ell w ith seven points, eight rebounds evenly split at both ends o f the floor- four assists and four steals and a blocked shot. Marco Juarez added six points, two rebounds and two steals. Steven Holland along with Ju a re z each added four points. Evan Rietmann also grabbed three rebounds and three steals. Juarez added two rebounds and a steal to the count. Holland also managed another blocked shot. K irk H aguew ood, Kaleb Dummler and Alex Rietmann added two points each. Haguewood stole two more times and Alex Riet mann grabbed a rebound, two assists and a steal o f his own. Stillman grabbed a rebound and two more steals. lo n e m ade 7 for 10 at the free-throw line, while shooting 39% o f their field goals. Coach Stefani had this to say, “This was a win we needed. It took us a while to get going, but we finally opened things up in the second half.” lone meets up with Condon/ Wheeler, Tuesday at home, and then goes to Echo on Friday and Central Christian on Sat urday. Heppner game out strong, w inning the first quarter getting six points from center M aggie Col lins. In the second quarter the contest played back and forth with good play from both teams. The half time score was 21-20 Mus tangs. In the second half, the Rockets dominated the Mustangs, outscoring Hep pner 30-15 for a final score o f 60-36. Heppner fell to 4-5. S c o rin g fo r th e Mustangs was led by Bailey Bennett with 10 points and Rauch, Wilson, and Collins scoring six points each. On Saturday, Janu ary 29, the Mustangs host ed the W eston-M cEw en Tigerscots. In their first scheduled gam e, earlier this season, the Tigerscots edged the Lady Mustangs for a win in a close game at Weston. Playing at home, Heppner found the answers they needed to win and stay alive in conference play as they head toward districts in February. T aig h ler D o u g h erty had six points in the first quarter to fire up the M ustangs who led 21-13 at the half. The Tigerscots were out-scored in the sec ond half 25-18 for a 46-31 loss to the Lady Mustangs. Bailey Bennett and Dough erty each scored 12 points and Lindsay Cutsforth had nine points for the M us tangs. Heppner is now tied for fourth place in league with the Elgin Huskies at five wins and five losses. T he L ady M u s tangs go on the road this week to play Enterprise and Union. i By Paula Emmel The lone JV boys play ed ju st a h a lf gam e against South W asco on January 29, but they went at it like it was a full game and set out to win it. And win they did. lone started with a 14-point quarter to the R edsides’ six points and the final score was 31 -20. It took the first few moments for the boys to get their rhythm and then they were hustling. C oach noted the p e rf o r m a n c e s o f K irk H aguew ood, who played an all-around game; Luke Emmel for running the of fense; and Kaleb Dunmler for his four assists. Team reb o u n d in g had lo n e at 13 to South W asco’s 11 rebounds. Team scorers: Haguewood-16, Jason-four, Joel S tillm an-three, and Emmel, Dumler, Zane King, and Gus Peterson with two points each. Dumler lead assists with four. Emmel and Peterson had two as sists each. Haguewood was the lead rebounder w ith eight. Haguewood also led the steals w ith four and again, Emmel and Peterson had two steals each. Coach Swanson comments, “The kids were a little sluggish at first and then they picked up the pace. 1 am proud of them since we hadn’t played in a week and a half. We shot 45% from the floor and had 10 assists and 10 steals with only nine turnovers - ju s t in the half.” Cardinal varsity boys beat Nixyaawii 75-51 By Paula Emmel The lone boys’ var sity basketball gam e on January 28 finished out a clean sweep for all lone high school teams against Nixyaawii. The boys start ed with the lead and kept building on it throughout the game. “This was a great win for us,” said Coach Stefani. “We needed to con trol the tempo o f the game, and that is what we came out and did.” lone shot 46 percent in field goals to N ix y a a w ii’s 28 percent, lone’s Zac Orem shot the only three point shot for the Cardinals, while two of the Nixyaawii Eagles shot 10 three-pt shots, between them, lone effectively kept them on the outside. Steven Holland had double digits on both sides of the court with 10 points and 11 re bounds and one blocked shot. Tanner Rietmann also scored 10 points, grabbed eight rebounds, gave three assists, had four steals and blocked a shot. His brother, Evan made seven baskets, and grabbed four rebounds. Collin brought down four rebounds, gave an assist and nabbed a steal, Kirk Haguewood added a basket and Alex Rietmann rounded out the players with a rebound, and steal of his own. The girls had an exciting close game that ended in a win. The boys just simply followed it up and came out on top. Both teams knew they needed a win and they earned it.
