This victory gives Mahoney a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. The school-level Bee, at which students an swered oral questions asked by Heppner High teacher John Flaherty, was the first round in the 23rd annual National Geographic Bee. The Bee is sponsored by Google and the National Geographic Society. C om peting with Mahoney in the final school round were: Kolby Cur rin, Kane Sweeney, Demi Schm idt, C laire G rieb, Lane Wilhelm, Kevin Mur ray, Logan Grieb, Olivia Schmidt, Sophie Grant, C h ris B row n, S ydney Qualls and Kevin Smith. First runner up was Demi Cheerleader Dessert Auction to be held Jan. 29 Schmidt, and second runner up was Logan Grieb. Following the HES Bee, Mahoney took a writ ten test to determine if she will advance to the Oregon Bee on April 1. The Na tional Geographic Society and Google will provide an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC for state cham pions and teacher- escorts. But l like the fight in the kids and I believe that is what won this game for them.” Lady Mustangs lose to Outlaws Mustang JV girls take win over Weston-McEwen The Mustang JV girls beat Weston-McEwen last Saturday, January 15, 35-29. • They got off to a good start out scoring the Tiger Scots 13-4 in the first quarter led by six points from Carrie Haguewood and four from Lilly Sand- ford. The second quarter was even at seven and the teams went to half with the Mustangs ahead 20-11. The third quarter the TigerScots took control out scoring the Ryan Dougherty, Jordan Jones. In the third quarter, Echo closed the gap to end it in a tie at 38. From then on the score was tied several times, ending regulation play tied at 55. Moving into Overtime the Cards outscored the Cougs by four points. The four minute overtime had Adam Collin making his free- throw to bring the score to 61-59. Then Steven Hol land blocked a shot put up by the Cougars, followed by two free-throws points by Zac Orem, sealing the win at 63-59. Orem led the team with 24 points, with half of his points from three-point shots. Tanner Rietmann and Collin also had double-digit scores with Rietmann at 16 and Collin with 12 points, with both of them having one three-point each. Hol land had six points and Micah Stillman had five points. Rietmann led with seven assists, Orem gave four assists, Collin and Stillman had two each, and Holland dished out an as sist. Rietmann also led the boards with three offensive rebounds and 14 defensive rebounds. Holland came in with one offensive re bound and eight defensive rebounds for nine. Which puts there record at 5-4. The scoring was as follow s: C orrea, 7; Haguewood, 7; Osmin, 5; Sandford, 4; three each for Greenup and Hintz; and two each for Day, Kindle, and Gray.
