Lady Cards pick up two wins over Christmas break
The Lady C ardi
nals picked up two wins to
one loss in the first week
o f their non-conference,
Christmas break basketball
schedule. The Cards hung
tough in a close loss to Pilot
Rock but collected wins
against Culver and Irrigon.
Playing in Pilot
Rock on Tuesday, Decem
ber 21, the Lady Cards
seemed determined to not
let the favored Rockets get
away. The t. ams swapped
buckets in the early going
but Pilot Rock built a six
point lead, 14-8, midway
through the first quarter.
Stacee Halvorsen nailed a
three-pointer to close the
lead to three, 11-14 at the
end of one. She then drove
the lane for the first score
of the second quarter to pull
the Cardinals back within
one. Six lone girls were in
the scorebook by halftime
and the Rockets led by a
small margin, 26-24. It was
the third quarter where Pilot
Rock separated itself from
the Cardinals, using their
significant height advantage
to outscore lone 13-6. The
Rockets started the fourth
with a nine-point advantage
and ended the game with
the same margin, taking the
win 47-38.
JoAnna Patton con
tinued her strong play in the
paint, scoring a team-high
16 points. She was the only
Cardinal in double figures
with the remainder of the
scoring spread out through
the team. Collette Cason
had six, Stacee Halvorsen
had five, Beth Morter, four.
Shadow Kendrick, three
and Mary Rietmann and
Lacey Thompson scored
two each.
JoAnna Patton and
Beth Morter each had 14
rebounds. Patton added
three steals while Morter
had two assists and two
blocks. Mary Rietmann
had seven rebounds and two
assists while Collette Cason
and Lacey Thompson each
came up with three steals.
“The reason we
play these tough pre-season
games is to make ourselves
better,” said Coach Mike
G arrett. “To come out
and be that competitive is
good.” Garrett noted that
Pilot Rock is favored to
with the Blue Mountain
Conference and has only
one loss so far this sea
son. “We worked hard and
played great defense. We
held them to 15-20 points
below their season aver
age.”
On Thursday, De
cember 23, the Cardinals
hosted Culver, coming away
with a 48-28 win. lone
never trailed, jumping out
to a 14-8 first quarter lead
and building that to a 27-
10 halftime margin. It was
in that second quarter that
sophomore, Stacee Hal
vorsen, established herself
as a shooter, scoring 11 of
her 13 points from all over
the floor. The
ODFW invites anglers to
open house in Salem Jan. 4
O regon an g lers
will have a chance to share
their ideas, comments and
concerns about the state’s
fisheries with top ODFW
manage^, at an open house
on Jan. 4 in Salem.
The meeting will
go from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at
the ODFW Headquarters,
3406 Cherry Ave. NE, Sa
lem. The agenda will be set,
in large part, by the ques
tions and concerns raised
during the meeting.
“This open house
meeting is a good way to
start the new year,” said
Rhine Messmer, ODFW
R ecreatio n al F ish eries
Program manager. “It’s a
chance for us to hear what
issues are on the minds of
anglers so we can take ap
propriate action.
The meeting is be
ing held in conjunction with
a meeting o f the Inland
Sports Fishing Advisory
Committee, which provides
public perspectives and
input on implementation of
ODFW’s 25-Year Angling
Enhancement Plan. The
plan is available on the

Twice a year the
fishing advisory commit
tee meetings are open to
the public as a forum for
r
interested anglers to bring
their fishery management
issues, thoughts and ideas
to ODFW fishery managers
and administrators.
In addition to the
open-forum, ODFW staff
will provide an update on
changes to the public pro
cess for developing new
angling regulations. The
department is looking for
ways to improve the public
process and still retain its
value to the public and the
department.
“We’ve heard from
the public and from the Fish
and Wildlife Commission
that the current process
is too cum bersom e and
too much time is spent on
proposed regulations that
would never be adopted,”
Messmer said.
“We are interested
in hearing what anglers
think of some of the key
changes w e're proposing
to the process,” he added.
“The public plays an im
portant role in the develop
ment of our fishing regula
tions and we want to ensure
that we don’t diminish the
public benefits from this
process.”
Revisions o f the
public process are under
way, and will be adopted
by the Fish and Wildlife
Commission next August.
The revised process will be
used for the development
of the 2013 Oregon Sport
Fishing Regulations.

Coach Mike Gar

win. “It was a good team
effort. Our defense played
another great game and held
a good 2A school under 30
points.” He noted that the
team handled Culver’s pres
sure well. “They went to a
man-to-man in the second
half and that took us a while
to adjust, but we did.”
The Lady Cardi

Christmas layoff but looked
anything but rusty on Mon
day, December 27, in Irri
gon. The Cards set the tone
of the game immediately,
hustling out to a 12-1 first
quarter lead and keeping
it up for a 25-7 halftime
advantage. lone kept up

C ardinals had a decent
shooting night, making 18
of 50 for 36 percent.
“This was a game
that I was concerned about.
Irrigon has been improv
ing week to week and we
were coming into this game
shorthanded,” said Coach
Mike Garrett. “Defensively
we set the tone early and
had a great first quarter. The
kids controlled the rebound
ing through the rest of the
first half and that allowed
us to go into halftime with
a comfortable lead. Second
half was played with very
little emotion from either
team and we were able to
play some different rota
tions and work on some of
our set plays.”
The Lady Cardi
nals will finish their vaca
tion schedule hosting Pilot
Rock on Wednesday and
