J representatives for their contributions The Oregon Wheat Growers League leader ship bestowed awards upon several individuals over the course of the Oregon/ldaho Grains Conference held in Portland. During the annual meeting, President Darren Padget, honored Oregon W heat G rowers League board members. Bob Mar tin - Sherman County Pres ident (Outstanding County President), and Dan Steiner - co-chair, marketing com mittee (Outstanding Com mittee Chair) were both acknow ledged for their outstanding contributions during 2010. Bob has served the Oregon Wheat producers for a number of years as liaison for Sherman County to the board of directors, and will continue his ser vice in 2011. Dan was reco g nized for his work in main taining the quality o f the information presented at the monthly Statewide Wheat Marketing Education Se ries. The Oregon Wheat Growers League is appre ciative of Bob and Dan for their selfless contribution to the industry. During the Joint A w ards L u n ch e o n on Wednesday, December 2, the O WGL honored two in dividuals with the “Above and B eyond” award for 2010. David Shelton, exec utive director o f the Wheat Marketing Center, Portland, was recognized for his tire less efforts working with bakers, millers and trade teams from throughout the world to promote the qual ity of Oregon wheat, and its end-use capabilities. MCSO responded to a report of a domestic dispute. The situation was resolved by contact. An in to x ic a te d bar patron was refusing to leave, however left prior to a deputy arriving on scene. A deputy investi gated a report of someone trying to bum a toilet seat at the city park. It was de termined there was a black mark on the seat. A deputy was con tacted by a citizen who wanted his girlfriend to leave his residence. Larissa Cray, a student at Heppner High School, recently won third place in the Pacific Region of the National Carden Clubs Essay Contest. Cray has three sisters. She plays basketball and softball and enjoys listening to country and modern music. Her favorite subject is math. Club members were able to get in at least one flight each before the weather turned too cold. The SMORC 4H Rocket Club still has room for three more kids, ages 8-13. Anyone interested in joining can contact the OSU Extension Office for information on joining 4H. John Ripple and M orrow C ounty G rain Growers contributed $100 to the club in 2006 and the funds are planned to be used to purchase some launch and ground support equip ment and motors for future launches. A deputy handled a parking complaint. MCSO received three driving complaints. Code Enforcement Three barking dog complaints were received, resulting in two citations. A caller reported finding a dog. The caller was going to keep the dog until the owner arrived home. A deputy returned a dog to its owners after Public Works found it. A caller reported high school football players were honking their horns at 6 a.m. as they drove through town. Loud music was reported to be coming from a residence. A deputy was unable to locate any loud music. A code enforce ment contact was initiated for debris. Two dogs w ere transported to Pet Rescue. Theft Complaints MCSO investigat ed a report of stolen cooler containing pop and alco holic beverages. MCSO received theft complaint from the high school. Dog fund depleted DeMayo also re ported that the city dog fund is being depleted faster than expected. The fund pays for dogs that are picked up in town and taken to Pet Rescue in Heppner. A dis cussion was held on trying to enforce the dog licensing law and collect more fees. “People need to know we are going to enforce this (the law)”, DeMayo said. He said people should know that it will be more expen sive to pay a fine if their dog is picked up running at large, than to purchase a li cense. City Councilmember Cindy Doherty said many people have dogs that do not go outside and asked how the city would enforce the license law on those dogs. DeMayo said there wasn’t much the city could do about unlicensed dogs that are restrained inside homes or yards and are not caught running at large. In other action city attorney Ann Spicer in troduced her son, Philip Spicerkuhn, w ho has joined the family law firm and will now be attending city coun cil meetings and handling the city legal business. The council heard from St. Patrick Senior Cen ter director Judy Buschke who said there are currently three apartment vacancies at the center. She said a water problem at the apart ments had cost $215. Dr. Jim Peterson, OSU Wheat Breeder, was honored with the “Distin guished Service Award” for 2010. Dr. Peterson was acknowledged for his long term commitment to yield and end use functionality, assuring the needs and ex pectations of both producer and buyer are factored in to the varieties he and his co-workers develop and re lease.
