The Cardinals found the mara thon road trip worth the ef fort and the time on the bus to test the competition in the Mountain Valley League in the southern Willamette Valley. lone was playing beyond normal conference opponents to fill two league game spots created when South Wasco County and Nixyaawii couldn’t field teams this season. From the start, the gam e had the feel o f a Cardinal run away, despite the fact that the McKenzie team was oversized to say the least. On the C ards’ first four possessions, they scored twice and were able to drive inside the 10 on the other two. On lone’s first possession o f the game, the drive was capped with a Tanner Rietmann to Adam Collin 16-yard touphdown pass. Tanner Rietmann ran in the extra point. The next possession also ended in a score when Micah Stillman dashed in from seven yards out. The extra point was no good on that one and the score stood at 14-0. N e i t h e r te a m scored in the second quarter so the Cardinals sat on the same 14-0 lead at the half. Early in the third, McK enzie briefly threatened to make things interesting. Taking advantage o f an lone fumble, McKenzie m arched dow nfield and sent a runner in from 44 yards out. With the extra point good, the score stood at 14-8. The Cardinals had an answer though, and on the very next possession Tanner Rietmann snuck in on a two-yard run. The extra point was no good. That was the start of 18 unanswered points for lone. At the start of the fourth quarter, Alex Rietmann got loose for a 50-yard touch down run. The final score of the contest came courtesy of sophomore, Ty Barnett who punched in from 12 yards out to make the final margin of victory. “They were a big, physical team,” said Car dinal Head Coach Dennis Stefani. “We were still able to control the ball and put together long drives.” He was quick to credit the of fense for doing a great job of moving the ball but said the difference in the game may well have been the de fense. “Our defense played terrific.” Alex Rietmann was the leading rusher, gaining 177 yards on 20 carries. Tanner Rietmann, playing quarterback, was the second leading rusher with 89 yards on 16 carries. Luke Emmell was 2-24, Ty Barnett was 2-19 and Micah Stillman was 4-16. The ground game was where it was at as the team only gained 46 pass ing yards out of 371 yards of total offense. Tanner Rietmann had another all-around ef fort, leading the team with 15 tackles including seven solo. He also had one in terception. Tom Holland had 10 tackles (3 solo) and Micah Stillman also had 10 with two solo. “Tanner had the game o f his life,” com mented Coach Stefani. “He played with a lot of emo tion and the other kids fol lowed.” He also noted that K irk Haguew ood had a noteworthy effort. “He had a terrific game at defensive end.” “I’m very proud of them,” said Coach Stefani. “It was a game that if we could have kept the turn overs down, we would have just dominated.” The Cardinals re turn to league play this weekend, traveling to Ar lington on Friday, October 22. Mustangs used bye week to get healthy By Lonnie Rill The Heppner Mus tangs (4-2) went into their bye week not only prepar ing for the next contest, but also to heal from a success ful, but rough first half of the year. “We are taking a step back this week,” said Heppner coach Greg Grant. “We are focusing on coach ing up some of the younger guys and going back to fun damentals since we don’t have to put in a game plan this week.” Grant’s game plan has worked so far, after tallying the Mustang’s 78th consecutive conference win in a romping of Stan field 36-8 last Friday. As a matter of fact, Grant’s plan The Heppner Football Program will be hosting has worked since October a hamburger feed before the football game on Friday, o f 1998 when the M us October 22. To put the last time Heppner lost a conference game into context, Titanic was in the movie theatres, Green Day was topping the charts of Rolling Stone and President Bill Clinton plead his inno cence during his impeach ment. Ridiculously, Hep pner’s streak of conference wins doesn’t even begin to work into the record books until it eclipses the 151 consecutive wins (regular season and playoffs) set by Del La Salle High School of Concord California from 1992 through 2004. Hepp ner does currently hold the longest conference winning streak in any division of high school football in the state of Oregon. H e p p n e r l ooks ahead to rival Pilot Rock, who the Mustangs haven’t lost to in 25 years, which pre-dates Grants’s reign as play-caller by five years. “They (Pilot Rock) are a very physical, up front team that love to run the ball. They have some dangerous receivers too,” Grant said. “They will probably play a very basic game, but they are tough on both sides of the ball.” When asked what he though of the first half of the season Grant replied, “Our kids are working re ally hard, but they know there are some tough games ahead.” Grant and the Mus tangs host the Rockets on Friday night, October 22, at 7 p.m., at Les Payne Field in Heppner.
