Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Author and illustrator visits lone and Heppner elementary schools As Eastern Oregon was all abuzz with the cel ebration o f the 100*h an niversary of the Pendleton Round-Up, students at Hep pner and lone Elementary Schools enjoyed their own Round-Up event. Nancy Garhan Attebury and Joan G ilbert M adsen, author and illustrator o f ‘“ Twas the Night Before Round- Up” visited both schools on September 14th and 15th. Staff and students in the two com m unities w elcom ed their visitors in true cowboy attire. Both of the women have ties to the Pendle ton Round-Up as Nancy’s Grandpa George Attebury was a saddle bronc rider in the 1912 rodeo and Joan’s relative, Brent Gilbert, was a bull rider at Pendleton during the m id -1 9 7 0 ’s. Nancy calls Moscow, Idaho “home” while Joan lives in Enterprise. Wednesday found them in lone for the morning before head ing to Pendleton and the Roung-Up. After group presentations, Nancy and Joan visited all of the class rooms where they taught writing lessons to the stu dents. The younger children worked together to create a group story, while the M e e t and D isc u ss the Issu es with Jean Falb© Democratic Candidate Oregon House District 57 older writers penned their own “‘Twas the Night Be fo re ....” Stories ranged from the night before the big test to the night before the fair. Students and teach ers alike were invited to purchase autographed cop ies o f the book at a dis counted price. Author and illustrator were amazed at the number of books sold in Heppner and lone, and even had to make a rush after-school trip to Pendle ton to get more books. The cost o f the presentations was paid for in lone by the lone School and in Heppner by the HES Parent-Teacher Club. Children will con tinue to enjoy the delight ful story long after the Round-Up arena is quiet once again. A wide-eyed lone first grader said, “I like how the lady made the horses look like they were flying!” Another older stu dent at HES said, “ I ’m going to turn my "Tw as the Night Before...” story into a book. Maybe some day I’ll get to publish my own children’s book!” Yes, maybe someday. their first meeting of the season starting off w ith a picnic. The highlight of the evening was a report from the Girls State attendee Kelsi Putman and the Dis trict #6 commander of the legion, as well as welcom ing some new members. Putnam gave a run down of her very busy week at Willamette University in Salem. She learned how one goes about w riting and presenting a bill, about lobbying and many other aspects it takes to run the government.
