Talent Show: Drew Johnson won 1*' place in the adult di vision, he received $75; K ristal Tem ple received $50 for 2nd and there was a tie for 3rd between Dri- on Donner, and Marianna and Cherisse Lemmon. In the youth division (10-17) Molly and James Creason received $30 for 1st place, 2nd place was Harley and Brianna Davis, they will receive $20 and 3rd place went to Andrew Bara, he will receive $10. Pet Show: The winners o f the Prettiest and U gliest Pet Show were: Emily Pappas and Sophie for the Prettiest pet and Faith Futter and Shilo for the Ugliest. Grill Offs: Painted Hills Natu ral B eef Backyard G rill ing contest was won by Paul Keefer, 2nd place was M ustang BBQ (Daye and Michelle Stone) and 3rt was Mark and Lisa Pratt. Foster Farms Big Cluck Grill O ff was won by the team of Mark and Lisa Pratt, 2nd was Hot Lips (S teve A llen and R obin B re d fie ld ) and 3rd w ent to B evington Farm s (Er nie Bevington and Shelly Fisher). The lone Lady Car dinals kicked their 2010 volleyball season off in a big way w inning five o f their six pool games at the Dufur Tournament on Sat urday, September 4. With the departure o f four senior starters, the Cardinals look completely different than the team that adv an ced to the second round o f the state p lay offs in 2009 but it is clear that the potential exists for another good cam paign. The Cardinals took the court at 9 a.m. for the d a y ’s first m atch against league opponent, Arlington. Both teams dealt with first game jitters but the Cardi nals hung together for the 20-15 win. Next, the Lady Cardinals put away Triad Feds, farmers, and friends feed families Oregon’s Best Contests a hit at Morrow County Fair Children and fami lies are in great need o f donated food this summer. USDA em ployees, farm ers, and friends are joining together to combat hunger at USDA offices throughout the country; and the gov ernment’s goal is to collect 1.2 million pounds o f food nationwide. Em ployees at the Ag Service Center in Hep pner have donated over 50 pounds o f non-perishable food to the South M or row County Neighborhood Center during the donation period that ends September 14. Morrow County farmers and friends are invited to participate in this important project and bring in non- perishable items and place them in one o f the donation boxes. The contests are intended to inspire creativity using Oregon products. This year’s first place win ner was Rebecca Jepsen. Rebecca’s Tomato Cheese Pinwheels used fresh ingre dients and Bob’s Red Mill flour. She will receive $50 and two five pound bags of Bob’s Red Mill flour. A fter dispatching Joseph 20-5, the pecking order had been established in the upper gym and it was evident that the toughest com petition was ahead w ith Pow der Valley and Perrydale loom ing as the day’s last two opponents. Powder Valley has a tall, hard hitting team but the Cardinals were not intimidated as they pulled away for a convincing 20- 13. The last match o f the day against Perrydale was the best match o f the day. Perrydale had just one loss on the day at the hands of Pow der V alley and they Favorites contestants pre pared tra d itio n al fam ily dishes using FLAV-R-PAC an d S a n tia m p ro d u c ts . There were no entries this year. The first place winner w ould have received an em broidered apron and a product coupon. O regon produced cheese was highlighted in the D elicious, N utritious Sum m er C heese R ecipe Challenge sponsored by the Dairy Farmers of Oregon. Contestants use at least one type o f Oregon cheese in a snack, salad, main dish, side dish or dessert. The w inner w ould have won a prize and some coupons for O re g o n -m a d e d airy products for first place, but there were no entries. T h e H e r m is to n W a te rm e lo n G r o w e r s ’ H e rm isto n W aterm elo n Seed-Spitting Contest does not involve cooking, but is creative and unique. It is always a big hit in Mor row County. C ontestants were divided into four divi sions - Men, Women, Youth (8-15 years) and Children (7 years and under). One- were a scrappy, defensive team. The game see-sawed back and forth with a one point margin all the way to 17 points before the Pirates took advantage o f Cardinal m istakes to take the win 20-17. C o ach D aw n Eynetich liked what she saw from the team. “I thought the girls played exception ally w ell on Saturday.
