Jordan Sw eeney, K ellen Grant, and John McElligott were the lucky winners. A ll b ra n c h e s o f BEO are having sim ilar drawings, giving away one to five backpacks at each branch and/or donating the supplies they purchased and collected from staff and community to the school. W illo w C r e e k First annual Dick Ekstrom Classic Golf Tournament held The first annual Dick Ekstrom Classic G olf Tournament was recently held in the Seattle area. Dick Ekstrom was a former lone resident. The tourna ment was held by the Social Security Administration. Ekstrom was bom in Portland on August 8, 1937 to Herbert and Mae Ekstrom. The family moved to lone where he attended school and graduated in 1 ^55. He continued his edu cation at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande. In 1960 Ekstrom began his professional ca reer with the Social Security Administration working in several locations includ ing Oregon, W ashington, California, and Baltimore, MD. He retired in 1995 as an assistant regional com m issioner in the S eattle Regional Office. E k s tro m w a s a m em ber o f the H eppner E lks a n d th e L u th e ra n Church. HHS Class of 2000 to hold reunion The Heppner High School Class o f 2000 will be celebrating their 10 year class reunion the weekend o f September 17 and 18. The Homecoming football game begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 17, for those wanting to at tend. Feel free to meet up at Bucknum’s after the game. On Saturday, September 18, class members will hold a family barbecue potluck at the Heppner City Park from 12-4 p.m. Hamburgers and hotdogs will be provided and those planning to attend Hope Lutheran/All Saints Episcopal shared ministry announces upcoming events The shared ministry o f Hope Lutheran Church and All Saints Episcopal Church announces several upcoming events. For the past several years, the women o f Hope Lutheran Church have spon sored an ecumenical Bible study meeting one morning a month. This year, in order to allow more wom en to participate during the lunch hour, a study o f Philippians w ill be held w eekly on M ondays at noon, a lte r nating between Hope and JDRF fundraisers to be held This year will be the grand finale (Year 7) for Beth’s Buddies to par ticipate in the Walk to Cure Diabetes as Beth will be off to college next year. The walk is scheduled for Oc tober 3 in Portland. Before the walk, a spaghetti dinner and car wash will be held as fundraisers for the event. . The spaghetti din ner will be held in conjunc tion with the Joseph vol leyball and football games on Friday, September 10, at lone School. The din ner will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. or while supplies last. The cost is $5 per person for spaghetti, green salad, French bread and a drink. Also, St. William’s Youth Group will hold a “Wash” to Cure Diabetes next Sunday, September 12, are asked to bring a dessert or side dish and a beverage o f choice for your family. The team has walked in rain and beautiful sunshine and members have ridden rides until dizzy and sick but it has been a fun adventure and great time of togetherness. B eginning Satur day, September 11, a ser vice o f evening prayer will be offered weekly at Hope Lutheran Church beginning at 8 p.m. This will be an abbreviated, contemplative service designed especially for those who are unable to attend worship on Sunday morning as well as those who would like to end the week in prayer. Beginning Friday, October 1, the shared min istry invites all children in the comm unity ages four through 6th grade to attend “First Fridays ~ Friends o f Jesus,” a morning filled with Bible stories, games, m usic and crafts. Lunch will be provided. This free ev en t w ill o ccu r at A ll Saints Episcopal Church the first Friday o f each month throughout the school year from 8 a.m. to noon. Oregon East Symphony announces Messiah rehearsals to begin This December the O regon E ast Sym phony and Chorale will present a special concert featur ing the Christmas portion o f Handel’s Messiah. The concert will take place on Saturday, D ecem ber 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Vert A uditorium . The chorale will be accompanied by the Oregon East Symphony and conducted by Music Direc tor Candidate, Dr. Edward Dixon of WallaWalla. The OES has is sued public invitations to participate through local churches and would like to have a large ecum eni cal choir to celebrate this wonderful holy work.
