S h e w as b o rn June 7, 1916 in Turner, the daughter of Jobe and Hattie Lindsey Crabtree. She was raised on a farm near Cecil in Morrow County. She at tended a one room school in the country thru the 8th grade and graduated from lone High School in 1935. On December 30, 1936 she married Lewis Halvorsen in Vancouver, WA. The couple raised five children and two foster children. Mrs. Halvorsen en joyed sewing, playing cards, bingo, going to ball games, and in her younger days waterskiing, participating in ski shows at Hat Rock. She drove bus for the school and also the Senior Citizen bus. Dot was involved in many organizations, serv ing as the Mother Advisor for the lone Rainbow Girls for 19 years, she served as Master several times in the Grange as well as serving as secretary for over 20 years. She was a 65 year member of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron 13 times and Grand Officer three times. She was a member of the lone PTA, Good Neigh bor Club, and the United Church of Christ. In 1988 she was awarded Citizen of the Year by the Heppner Cham ber o f Commerce, and she was chosen mother of the year in 1969. She is survived by: her children, Linda Hal vorsen Azevado and her husband Xavier of Aloha, Joe Halvorsen and his wife Linda of lone, Mark Hal vorsen and his wife Marta o f Vancouver, WA, and Frank Halvorsen and his wife Cathy o f lone; fos ter children, Judy Mason o f West Covina, CA and Alice Rea of Fairfax, CA; 19 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: her husband Lewis Halvorsen in 1991; twin sister, Manulita “Dim ple” Munkers; sister, Juani ta “Babe” Stender; a brother Chauncy “Leo” Crabtree; and three grandchildren. Michael William Rowell A burial service for Michael Rowell, 57, of Heppner will be held at the lone Cemetery on Saturday, June 5, at 2 p.m. He died on November 20, 2009 in Heppner. Cherilyn A. Smouse C h e r i 1 y n A . Smouse, 61, of lone died Thursday, May 27, 2010 at Pioneer Memorial Hos pital in Heppner. A memo rial service will be held at 1 p.m. on T h u rsd a y , June 3,2010 at the lone Community Church. She w as b o rn October 6, 1948 in Cherilyn A. Smouse P endleton, the daughter of Kenneth J. and Francis M. Burgoyne Smouse. She attended lone Grade School and High School from 1954 to 1965. She transferred to Heppner High School her senior year where she graduated in 1966. She graduated from Oregon State University with de gree in psychology. She later graduated from Linn Benton Community College with an associate degree in nursing then later received an associate degree in com mercial art from Portland Community College. Throughout most o f her life she remained active in her church, sing ing in the choir, playing the piano and helping with the newsletters and the bulle tins. The family has a wheat ranch near lone which she has remained active in also. During her working years, she was employed in sev eral retirement homes as a registered nurse. Her hobbies in cluded cooking, bicycling, hiking, camping, reading, and picking huckleberries. She also enjoyed nature and animals, in particular her cats and dogs. Survivors include: her mother, Francis Smouse of lone; and brothers, Ken neth L. Smouse of lone and Carl F. Smouse of Hermis- ton. She was preceded in death by her father Kenneth J. Smouse in 2000. James Henry Driscoll James Henry Driscoll, bom March 25, 1918 in Heppner, the son of William and Cecelia (King) Driscoll died in Poulsbo, WA on June 1, 2010 at the age of 92. At his request there will be no services. Inurnment will be at Riv erside National Cemetery in Riverside, CA with Cook Family Funeral Home han dling arrangements. Jim lived in Hep pner until his retirement in 1973 after 30 years with the US Post Office serving as Heppner’s postmaster. Jim married Bobbe (Roberta Thelma) Fortner on August 23, 1940. She preceded him in death in 1994. The couple raised three children, Janice Helen (Darryl) Bruning of Pendle ton, Oregon, James Thomas (Judy Schmidt) Driscoll o f Poulsbo, Washington, and Timothy Neil (Susie Clinker) Driscoll of Wil- sonville, Oregon. They enjoyed square dancing, playing bridge and golf, and travelling the US and Canada in their trailer, all pastimes they pursued in both Heppner and in Hemet, California where they lived following retirement. Jim m a rrie d a second tim e to Carolyn Bohlken in December of 1994. Jim and Carolyn lived in Hemet until Caro lyn’s death in 2006. He moved to Poulsbo to make his home with his son, Tom in 2007. During World War II, Jim served as postmaster in the US Navy aboard the destroyer John Rodger. He was a member o f the American Legion post in both Heppner and Hemet, and at the time of his death was the oldest living mem ber o f the Heppner Elks Lodge. He was a member o f All S aint’s Episcopal Church in Heppner and Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Hemet. In addition to his wives, Jim was preceded in death by: his parents; his brothers Thomas, Charles, William, Clifford and Har old Driscoll; sister Lucille Zimmerman; and a grand child, Rebecca Driscoll. He is survived by: his three children; step daughters Bonnie Pietrows- ki o f D urango, CO and Joanne Grisaffi of San Cle mente, CA; sisters Martha (Blaine) Carney of Cama rillo, CA and Mary (Fred) Pointer o f Seattle, WA; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
