Ione girls’ track team takes second place in district The Ione girls’ track team found points in unexpected places and exceeded expectations to claim second place in the team race at Saturday’s Big Sky District Track Meet in Moro. The Ione girls scored 97 points to perennial jibwer Sherman County’s 113. A sun-drenched day with just the slightest of breezes greeted com petitors at the Sherman County track. The top two qualifiers in each event advance to next weekend’s 1A/2A/3A State Meet at Western Oregon University in Monmouth. The Ione girls set the tone for their day with a convincing win in the 4X100 relay. Makenna Ra mos, Stacee Halvorsen, Beth Morter and Shadow Kendrick scorched the track in a season best time of 53.08, more than a full sec ond improvement over their previous league-leading best. Lacey Thompson and Rebecca Jepsen joined Beth Morter and Stacee Halvors en in the 4X400 at the end of the day to grab another gold. The team recorded a 4:29.67, a four second improvement over their previous best effort. Beth Morter had an outstanding day, taking the silver medal in the triple jump (33-3) and leading Stacee Halvorsen and Lacey Thompson to a 1-2-3 sweep in the 400 with PR’s all around. Lacey Thompson was a surprise second place finisher in the high jump (4-4) and advances to state. Shadow Kendrick ran a strong 100 meter race, recording a PR (13.77) and taking the second spot. Sophomore Collette Cason was another surprise state qualifier in the 800 (2:55.11) taking over second place with 200 to go. Rebecca Jepsen went stride-for-stride with South Wasco’s Cassiday Creel in the 300 hurdles (52.69) but it was her lean at the tape that sent her on to the state meet in the second posi tion. “I am the most excited about a two second PR” she said. The only cloud on the day was a false start DQ for Shadow Kendrick in the 200. Overall though, the young Ione team was giddy with their results. Collette Cason came on strong in the last 300 meters of the 800 for her second place finish. “I guess I wanted to go to state mofe than I thought I 'did”"She Said. Bfeth Morter, a junior and the team’s el der statesman sounded like a set of wind chimes with four medals hanging from her neck at the end of the day. “I was really nervous at the start of the 400 but sweeping that event was pretty cool.” “I’m really pleased,” said Coach Ryan Rudolf. “We got some nice surprises today and every girl scored in her race.” The Ione boys ad vanced their 4X100 re lay team (Gunner Jessen, Steven Holland, Tanner Rietmann and Matt Hams) on the basis of a runner-up finish with a time of 46.14. The 4X400 team (Luke Emmel, Matt Hams, Gun ner Jessen and Steven Hol land) claimed the district championships squarely on the shoulders of sophomore Steven Holland’s late race heroics. Steven Holland grabbed the baton in third place and it looked as if he had just too much ground to make up. To the delight of the crowd, though, he ac celerated off the last comer to move from third place to first to take the win in dra matic fashion. “I felt pretty good coming off the comer. At the 100 meter mark, I thought I had to go now or not at all.” “We were number one coming in,” said Coach Ryan Rudolf. “Coming from behind like that makes it exciting but sure gives the coach more gray hairs.” Matt Hams quali fied for state 400 meters. Running the open 400 for the first time in his ca reer, Hams ran a gutty race to capture second place (53.03.) “It was a (Coach) Rudolf idea" he said of his move to the quarter mile. “I got some pointers from Stephen (Larlee of South Wasco County) and tried to chase him.” Gunner Jessen was the only other individual qualifier on the Top left photo: The lone girls took 1st place in the 4X100.
