SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 24,2010 Lady M ustangs fall in championship game Alumni softball game The Heppner Lady to be held March 12 Mustangs went into the district tournament in Pend leton eying the number one seed to the state tourna ment and a home playoff game. In 32 minutes on the court at the Pendleton Convention Center those dreams were dashed. Heppner was able to rest on the first night of the tournament and watched as Pilot Rock beat Union for the right to play for the conference champi onship. From the start of the game Saturday night it looked as though Pilot Rock benefited from play ing the night before. In a hard fought, back and forth game the Lady Mustangs were never able to make a run that would put them over the top. Many games this year, the Mustangs held a considerable edge at the free throw line. On Satur day night, however, the free throw attempts were even ( 11) although Heppner had nearly twice as many fouls as Pilot Rock (20-11). Pilot Rock led 19- lb at the half and built on that in the third quarter when they held Heppner to just three points in the pe riod. Late three-point field goals by Jessica Hughes and Brynna Rust that looked as though they might be the spark needed to take the lead each time were an The 2010 Hepp ner High School Softball Program will be holding an alumni softball game during St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The game will be played on Friday, March 12, at 4 p.m. on the Bob Kilkenny Field. Any female alumni from Heppner High School, having played soft- ball or not, are welcome to play. Those planning to par- swered by Pilot Rock. Hughes led the Mus tangs with 10 points. Joan na Patton added nine points and six rebounds. Erin Price chipped in nine rebounds and five points. Rust led the defensive effort with four steals. Heppner will now travel across the state to play Friday in Riddle, who is the Mountain View Con ference #2 seed to the state tournament. Riddle comes into the game w ith an 18-7 overall record and 9-5 in conference play. Heppner was well represented on the all-con ference teams with four players earning recognition from the league’s coach es. Erin Price was voted to the first team. Jessica Hughes and Brynna Rust were named to the second team and Torri Lovgren ticipate are asked to RSVP before March 1. Mustangs set to play state playoff game on Saturday The Heppner wrestling team traveled to Union this past week end to participate in the district wrestling competition. Tomas Elguezabal placed second in the high school level, Kai Arbogast placed first in the 6,h-8,h grade level, and Joe Jones placed first in the K-5lh grade level. The K-5lh grade team placed first in their division K-5"1 team mem bers were: Joe Jones, Jack- son Lehman, Patrick Burch, Gavin Hanna, Leo Waite, Alex Lindsay, Zach Bred- field, Jorden Sweeney, Sa- bashtian Futter.
