Carol Poppenga, a Lewiston, Montana based artist, spent two weeks working with A.C. Hough ton students. Students leam some art in their regular classrooms, but the school does not offer a separate art class. Poppenga began the residency by giving students a crash course in drawing and painting, and helped them brainstorm for mural ideas. S tu d e n ts cam e up with two scenes from Oregon’s pioneer days: a wagon train stopping for the night; and a Native American village on hills overlooking the Columbia River. During the second week of the residency, Pop penga pulled three students at a time from class, gave them long white tee shirts and a paintbrush. The young artists received simple in structions: adding wool to a small herd of sheep, legs to a horse, or red combs on chickens and so forth. Students, instruc tors and families are all excited about the mural. St. Patrick’s meeting to be held Sheriff's Report The Morrow Coun ty Sheriff’s Office reports handling the follow ing business: O ctober 1: -BPD received a report from Lamb Weston that they are doing a 24-hour training exercise with a simulation ammonia leak with the use of smoke machines to make it look like an actual leak. Lamb Weston advised to send as sistance only if someone at the facility calls 911. The alarm company was also notified, since the alarms are triggered by smoke. -BPD received re port of a disturbance with a possible fight, but the reporter said the subjects split up. However she sug gested that the officers drive through the area to make sure they did not converge in another area. It was de termined that it was a verbal dispute over money and the Hermiston group involved had left the area. -BPD received re port o f a radiator in the middle o f the right hand lane on 1-84. -BPD received re port from a subject who said she had received a call from someone identifying himself as an officer with BPD or MCSO, but her phone died. She wanted to determine whether it was a prank or if an officer was re ally trying to contact her. -BPD cited Ameer Tillman, 25, for Driving Uninsured. The vehicle was towed. -BPD received a report from a subject who said she heard someone in the backyard and discov ered a fence board miss ing and medical marijuana plants gone. -BPD received re port of a subject receiv ing harassing phone calls. An officer responded, but the number showed up re stricted. A deputy re sponded and removed the hazard. -MCSO received report that someone was working on the water sys tem at Heppner Daycare and needed the city to turn the w ater off. H eppner Public Works on-call was advised. -MCSO received report from a Heppner sub ject that her daughter lost a purple Motorola Flip Phone while at the fairgrounds on Wednesday. They went to the fairgrounds and called the phone with no luck. The subjects were going to check the school Monday. -MCSO received report of a medium-sized black and white dog on a Boardman subject’s prop erty. A deputy responded and transported a Border collie to Pet Rescue. -MCSO received report of a red Dodge Pick up trespassing on a Board- man subject’s property. The reporter left a message on the vehicle for the owner to call. MCSO responded and determined the vehicle did have a pass to be there; it just wasn’t properly dis played. -MCSO received request from a subject to contact his father-in-law to let him know a family member had passed away. The call was transferred to Umatilla County Sheriff's Office. -M C SO deputy conducted a field interview in Heppner and advised kids who had been to the dance that the park is closed. -MCSO received report of a deer on the side o f the road. The reporter said her d au g hter’s ex- boyfriend hit it, but thought it was poached and left there. A deputy advised the deer was not hit, but left on purpose. He said if the re porter had any trouble with the male subject to contact the sheriff’s office. -MCSO received report from Umatilla Coun ty that they received a 911 call from the Irrigon area that sounded like some one was running. On call back there was no answer. Dispatch located a home phone number associated with the cell phone num ber. When contacted, the subject said she did not have a cell phone. A deputy re sponded, but was unable to locate anything. -MCSO received report o f a green Ford Ranger/Explorer all over the road on Hwy. 207- Echo/Butter Creek. The caller suspected that the driver was intoxicated and said that there were several vehicles behind the pickup. The subject was given a verbal warning for failure to maintain line and failure to yield. -MCSO received a report from OSP that they had transferred a call to Umatilla County Sheriff's Office concerning a white station wagon traveling west on Hwy. 730 with plates similar to one that may ran two vehicles off the road. MCSO deputy responded, but was unable to locate the vehicle. -MCSO received a request from an Irrigon woman for the sheriff's office to tell her 17-year- old daughter that she can't run away to live with her boyfriend. -MCSO cited Sal- vio Pena Gutierrez, 29 for Open Container. -Boardman Police Department assisted the Umatilla Police Department is showing were a juvenile subject’s parents live in Boardman. -Continued on Page E IG H T l
