The Mustangs put up an astounding 35 points in the first quarter. B ryan H olland returned the opening kick off to the Knights 11 yard line. Brent Eckman then ran in for a touchdow n on the first play from scrim mage. The Mustangs did not stop there scoring four more tim es in the first quarter. Bryan H olland ran in a touchdow n in the second quarter, fol lowed later by a Chris Lien field goal, making it 45-0 before halftime. The final score o f the game was 47-8. David Bernstein led the way on the ground with 63 yards on five car ries followed Brent Eck man with 60 yards on five carries. The M ustangs racked up a total o f 357 yards on 43 carries in the game. The Knights had 33 yards o f total offense in the game. Cardinals remain undefeated after homecoming game The lone C a rd i nals did the expected last Friday night, defeating a winless Nixyaawii in lone after a distracting week o f hom ecom ing festiv i ties. The Cards overcame a sluggish start with a 30 point second q uarter to defeat the Golden Eagles 64-28. lo n e ’s season re cord remains perfect at 7-0 while their league m ark moved to 4-0. W h e th e r it w as homecoming or overlook ing the opponent, the Cards took a while to find their usual gear. “We came out kind o f flat,” said Coach Dennis Stefani, “and we w ere probably overlooking them a little bit.” The Cards got on the board when RJ Ramos punched in from one yard out. A couple drives later, lone turned the ball over on dow ns deep in Nixyaawii territory. When the E ag le’s quarterback heaved up a desperation pass, Micah Stillman was there for the pick, ru n ning it back 21 yards for a touchdown. The Cards led 14-0 at the end of one. Nixyaawii answered with a score but then M icah Stillman got loose for a 65 yard touchdown and Tan ner Rietmann ran back yet another interception for 27 yards to score. Matt Hams and RJ Ramos connected on a 26 yard pass play and Nixyaawii also connected on a 26 yard pass play to conclude the scoring in the half. The Cards led 44-12. A le x a n d T a n - ner Rietmann both scored again in the third quarter. Nixyaawii scored twice in the fourth before Zac Orem ran 52 yards for the final score o f the game. T h re e C a rd in a l runners had 100-plus yard games. Micah Stillman had nine carries for 123 yards follow ed by A lex R ie t mann (12-113) and Tan ner Rietmann (9-102.) All totaled, lone had 41 carries for 430 yards. “ When you have three rushers over 100 yards, it is a pretty good night,” commented Coach Stefani. The pass attack was lightly used with RJ Ramos completing four of 13 for 51 yards. Matt Hams was the leading receiver w ith 39 yards. Although the game never really got close to an upset. Coach Stefani noted that Nixyaawii put up a gallant effort. “They made us put some drives together. They defended us pretty well. We finally w ore them dow n in the second quarter.” Defensively, Mi cah Stillman led the way with 10 tackles, five o f those solo. Eric Jepsen and Alex Fetterhoff both had seven (2 solo) as well as one quarterback sack. Matt Hams and Alex Rietmann each added six. T he w in lo ck ed up a Big Sky playoff spot for the Cardinals, assur ing them o f at least third place. “Now w e’re play ing for seeding and the league c h a m p io n s h ip ,” noted Coach Stefani. The Cards host Echo on Friday, October 30, with kickoff at 7 p.m. Lady Cards finish regular season play Mustang girls fall to Pilot Rock, two other teams lone to host district crossover volleyball game By Tayllor Gould On Thursday, Oc tober 21, Heppner High School v o lle y b a ll g irls trav eled to P ilot Rock. W ith P ilot R ock being fifth in districts and the Mustangs being second at the time, everyone knew that it was going to be a close game betw een the two rivals. The first game fin ished out w ith H eppner having a tough start with the score being Pilot Rock 25 and Heppner 17. The M ustangs came through with a close one in the next volleyball game but ended with Pilot Rock 25 and Heppner 22. Then Hepp- ner came back with a very good score o f Heppner 25 and Pilot Rock 13. The fourth match consisted of Pilot Rock 25 and Heppner 21 with Pilot Rock winning the game. Also that w eekend, the girls were involved in a tournament with games played against Elgin and W eston M cE w en. T he scores for the Elgin game were: first match - Elgin 25 H eppner 22; second match - Heppner 25 Elgin 21; third match - Elgin 28 Heppner 26; and the last match - Elgin 25 and Hep- pner 21. S c o r e s fo r th e W eston M cE w en gam e were: first match - Weston 25 H eppner 23; second match - Weston 25 Hep- pner 9; and third match - Weston 25 Heppner 23. The Mustangs lost both games but gave it a lot o f effort as there were many girls missing from the team. The sleep-depleted team exceeded expecta tions in morning pool play a fter a enjo y in g h o m e coming festivities until all hours and then boarding the bus at 6 a.m. The lone girls won their pool and advance to play Helix for the tournament champion ship. Several hours elapsed betw een the conclusion o f pool play and the com m encem ent o f the final gam e. The Lady C ards had difficulty fighting their fatigue after their extended period of R&R and fell to Helix in the title match. “Considering it was hom ecom ing, the girls played really well,” said Coach Dawn Eynet- ich. “The two and a half h o u r b re a k b e fo re th e HHS students participate in Red Ribbon Week Last week at Hep pner High School, the stu dents participated in Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is a tim e where students support being drug and alco h o l free. Each day a question pertaining to drug and alcohol statistics was posted and students submitted answers. Correct answers were awarded with various prizes. Throughout the week students received lone will host the district crossover game against Arlington on Thursday. October 29, at 6 p.m. in lone. On Thursday stu dents wore red to support their decision and attended an assembly. The speaker was M ichelle Stone, she told her story on how an accident involving alcohol changed her life. At the end o f the assem bly she played a song she wrote in m em ory o f her story. Students were inspired by her words; it was a very effective week. Halloween Teen Club Night to be held Sweet Production Ice Cream Parlour will be hosting a Halloween Teen Club Night on Saturday, October 31, from 8-11:30 p.m. Admission is $2. There will be fun drinks, dance contests, snacks, as well as a costume contest. Inland Northwest Musicians Chorale to hold opening concerts Inland Northwest Musicians Chorale will hold its opening pair o f concerts on October 31 at 7 p.m. at the high school in Waitsburg, WA and on November 1 at 4 p.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Pend leton.
