Full-tim e under graduates who have com pleted 45 credit hours at EOU in the 2008-09 aca demic year while maintain ing a minimum o f a 3.0 cumulative GPA are eligible for awards ranging from $750 to $1,500. Smalley honored at Governors’ Gold Awards Banquet Scholarships are available on an annual basis and students who meet the criteria are invited to reap ply in the spring for a total of three years. The evening event included a dinner and auc tion to raise funds for Spe cial Olympics Oregon. Jil lian, as a cross-country skier on the Oregon Delegation o f Team USA, proudly paraded across the stage to receive the “Shriver Great ness Award” named for Special Olympics founder, Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Among the eight other Governors’ Gold Re cipients was the 1977 Port land Trail Blazers NBA Championship Team. Jillian was able to speak briefly to Bill Walton while her sister Jordan asked for his auto graph. Another high point of the evening was a visit by the mascots of Oregon State University and University of Oregon. Bennie Beaver and the Oregon Duck set aside rivalries to support this special event. Special Olympics provides sports competition to athletes with intellectual and physical disabilities throughout the year. Local athletes from Umatilla and Morrow County are cur rently involved in training for the Regional Bowling Competition that will occur at the Desert Lanes Bowl ing Alley in Hermiston on November 14. Funding local pro grams is the responsibility of the local council. To help support the expenses of the bowling session the local Special Olympics program is currently selling tickets to a spaghetti dinner that will be on November 7 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Catholic Parish Hall in Hermiston. Morrow County Court weekly meeting held The Morrow Coun ty Court met on October 14 in Irrigon with Judge Tail- man, Commission Grieb and Commissioner Rea in attendance. Following is a summary of the meeting provided by Leann Rea. The court reviewed and approved accounts payable, payroll payable and voids for a total of $65,514.38. There will also be the estab lishment of Health Savings Accounts for all covered individuals. The insurance change will not occur until January 1,2010. The COLA will be calculated retroac tive to July 1, 2009. There was also a change which will tie mileage reimburse ment to the IRS rate. The court reviewed and approved a “Certificate of Appropriation of F unds” for the extension services which stated that the county will transfer to the OSU Extension Serv ice $26,241 each quarter for a total dis tribution of $104,964. Boardman Mayor Chet Phillips organized a day-long w orkshop last month to bring the council and staff together to create a current working strategic plan. The idea was bom from state and federal stim ulus funds being distributed to public entities in East ern Oregon last August. Mayor Phillips wants the city to be ready when fund ing opportunities presents themselves. He said he has “made it his personal agen da to bring more housing and amenities to Boardman to help our city grow”. The last time the city reviewed its strategic plan was in 2005. Mayor Phillips felt it was time to prioritize the city’s goals and to provide a great foun dation for accomplishing those goals. With the help of the workshop’s facilita tor, Paul Koch, city officials were able to agree that the completion of South Main Street was their number one goal. In all, 15 goals were identified including Sheriff’s Report Support group for parents of disabled children started in Irrigon Irrigon is starting a support group for parents of disabled children. The first monthly meeting of the support group will be held October 26 at Irrigon Jr/Sr High School from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The m eetin g is open to all Morrow and Umatilla County residents.
