September 9, 2009 Heppner Schools awarded certificates by National Carden Club Student's poems printed in national poetry book Five students from Heppner High and Elemen tary Schools recently won national and state level po etry contests. Two o f them were printed in the National Garden Club, Inc. poetry book. Those poems are listed below: “Nature's Song” By Cade Arbogast The sound o f a meadowlark chirping in a tree... The buzzing o f the little tiny bumble bee... A deer trodding on some sticks... And the crying of the chickadee's chicks... That is Nature’s Song! “When I Wake Up” By Sydney Qualls When 1 wake up I hear the birds sing 1 hear the wind whistle. Cade Arbogast and Skyler Hawks When I wake up 1 smell the crisp air 1 smell the scent of fresh cut grass. When I wake up 1 taste the dew drip on my hair 1 feel the wind blow against my skin. That is w hat I feel, hear, taste and smell. When I wake up. Emily Pappas, Sydney Qualls, and Kai Arbogast Child Care Resource and Referral classes announced Heppner Schools recently won National Garden Club, Inc. certificates of achievement. The elementary school won for their red tulip project. The high school won for their project of highlighting the mustang. These projects were sponsored by the Heppner Garden Club. They came from behind to defeat Echo 2 0-19 fo llo w ed by a n o th er close one, 20-17 over North Powder. Italian exchange student, Van essa Ziliani served out both o f those close w ins. lone downed Sherman County 20-18 and defeated A r lington 20-16 to finish the day. “ For the first tim e out this season, the girls played very well to gether,” said second-year head coach. Dawn Eynet- ich. “There are a few things we need to work on but all in all, I was very im pressed.” The Lady C ardi nals will travel to Heppner on Thursday, Septem ber 10, for a match with the Lady Mustangs, scheduled to start at 5 p.m. T he lo n e L ady Cardinals kicked off their 2009 campaign with a suc cessful performance at the Ranger Volleyball Jambo ree in Dufur on Saturday, S ep tem b er 5. U sing an all-around team effort, the lone girls won seven games and lost just one during the m arathon day o f volley ball. Teams played a single game with a 20 point cap against each opponent. The morning start ed bright and early with a 9 a.m. game against the host team Dufur. The Lady Car dinals didn’t subscribe to the first game jitters theory, coming out and taking care o f business 20-15. Next up was Wallowa and the lone team looked good, downing them 20-13. The C a rd in a ls then took on Perrydale. Early in the day, Perrydale looked like the best team in the tourney but the Lady Cardinals stayed Ladies Play Day results Flight B w i n ners were: low gross, Pat Dougherty; low net, Betty Christman; least putts. The class will be offered in both English and Spanish and is free. One-on-one sessions can be set up upon request. This class is required by the Child Care Division for anyone wishing to be come a Registered Family Child Care Provider, and for individuals that want to learn more about Oregon’s laws governing child care.
