SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 13,2009 Mustangs win district track title The Heppner g irls’ track team repeated as dis trict champions at the Blue Mountain District Champion ship on Saturday, May 9. The Mustangs won the event by scoring 177 points. Elgin fin ished second w ith 171 points. The Mustangs finished first in six events while sending two relay teams and eight girls to the state meet that is held at Western Oregon University May 15 and 16. Erin Price led the Mustangs by finishing first in three individual events and also running a leg on the champion 4x400 relay. Price won the 200-meter dash, 100- meter hurdles, and 300-meter hurdles. Brynna Rust is also going to state in four events. Rust finished second in the 400-meter dash and in the 300- meter hurdles. She also ran a leg on the 4x400 relay and the 4x100 relay. Catherine McEl- ligott won the 800-meters with a personal best time and Car rie Haguewood won the high jump with a jump of 4 ’ 10" that matched her season best. Carmen Lee finished second in the long jump, and Keshawna Talamantes finished second in the discus. The Heppner boys’ team took fourth as a team, besting their seventh place finish from a year ago. Jordan Hatfield and Jordan Wright earned trips to the state meet at WOU. Hatfield won the 110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles, and the triple jump. Most of the kids on the team were able to get personal bests, and that is all we can ask for,” first year Coach Melissa Coiner said. “1 was so pleased with our team effort today. There were athletes that stepped up and did events they weren’t used to doing just so we could score more points, and it turns out we needed every point. Eight lone track members qualify for state Eight c o m p etito rs qualified for the OSAA State 1 A/2A/3ATrack Meet based on their performances at the Big Sky District Meet on May 9 at Sherman County High School. The state meet will run May 15-16 at Western Oregon Uni versity in Monmouth. Both the lone boys and girls teams were third in the district standings. Clay Morter was the lone individual cham pion, claiming the high jump medal in a tie-breaker. He and runner up, Codey Johnson of South Wasco County went out at 6’0” with the same number of misses. The bar was lowered to 5’11” and Morter sailed over on his second attempt. The C ard in als ran away with the gold in the boys 4X400 relay. Alex Rietmann, Clay Morter, Matt Hams and Cory Peterson lowered their season best to 3:47.77 for the win. The lone 4X 100 team qualified for state w ith a runner up finish and a new season best of 46.08. Team members were the same as the 4X400. Cory P eterson ad vanced to state in the 400, finishing second in 54.93. Tie is an exchange student from Thailand who only started hur dling about three weeks ago. Clay Morter punched his state ticket another time, running a qualifying time in the 100 in a PR of 11.86. On the g ir l’s side, Makenna Ramos was runner up in the 100 with a time of 13.91 to advance to state. Beth Morter was second in the triple jump with a jump o f 30’0” and Rebecca Jepsen knocked 30 seconds off her 3000 time (13:10.18) to move on. Luke Bradfield did not make the state cut but placed fourth in the shot put, improving his PR in the event a whopping 5’8” over the past two weeks. Matt Hams missed c^eal Estate state by .75 of an inch in the long jump (19-3.75) and also placed third in the triple jump (39-06.75.). Rebecca Jepsen warmed up for the 3000 with a leg on the 4X100 (3rd) and a third place in the 400 meters with a time of 1:07.49. Alex Rietmann got on the podium in the 100, placing 6,h in 12.11. Luke Emmel was 4lh in the 800 with a time of 2:20.8 and Gunner Jessen was third in the 1500 after lead ing most of the race. Jessen was also 6lh in the 3000 and 5th in the 300 meter hurdles. Toon Junnoi was 4lh in the 110 hurdles, lowering his PR to 18.36. He also finished 5th in the high jump and 7,h in the 100. Stephen Holland was 6lh in the 300 meter hurdles (51.25) and Tanner Rietmann was 4lh in the triple jump (36- 9.5.) Cory Peterson was 6th in the discus (104-07.) On the girls’ side of things, Toffy Viwattavonwong was 5,h in the 800 meters and 6lh in the 1500 meters. Oil Ra- tinanthakul grabbed 5lh in the 1500. Tiana Camarillo was 4th in the 100 hurdles (19.14) and 5lh in the 300 hurdles (59.28.) The 4X 100 relay team, Maken na Ramos, Rebecca’Jepsen, Ti ana Camarillo and Tori Heagy were 3rd in 57.62. Beth Morter was 3rd in the high jump and Melanie Eldrige was 4,h in the long jump. Gip Charoenjai com peted in the 200 meters, 400 meters and the discus. Mary Gates threw the shot and discus all year while Tori Heagy ran the 100 and threw shot and discus. Tyree Svetich ran the 100 and 200 meters. For the boys, Omar Juarez and Jeremy Coleman ran the 800 meter and threw the shot. Kaleb Dumler long and triple jumped and Alex Fetterhoff ran the 1500.
