S tu dents are divided up into five team s spanning across the four grade levels. The teams were Poseidon, H erm es, A rtem is, Icarus and Aphrodite. Teams ac cumulate points all week to determine the winner. This is to be an annual event. “ My favorite part of this activity with work ing together and having fun co m p etin g ,” said so pho more, Robbi Johnston. “ 1 never thought I'd be tested this much about grammar, it definitely helped me im prove!” Students are quizzed on adjectives, nouns, pro nouns, verbs, adverbs, prep ositions and prepositional phrases. Thursday was dedi cated at ‘Toga Thursday’ in honor o f the “Gram m ara thon.” Many of high school students were dressed and ready to take on their rival teams. NAIFA Blue Mountain announces scholarship availability The Blue Mountain Chapter of the National Asso ciation of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA Blue Mountain) announces an offer of six $1,500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors and first-year college students from Eastern Oregon counties who best represent the desire and potential to pursue a career in insurance, business, finance, accounting or agri-business. Applications must be received by April 17. Late ap plications will not be considered. Applicants will be notified by May 15. These scholarships will be awarded to students attend ing or planning to attend any four-year college or community college. ALIGNMENTS The Umatilla-Mor- row Education Service Dis trict announces that nomi n atio n s for the 2007-08 Crystal Apple “Excellence in Education” Awards are now being accepted through Wednesday, April 1. T his y e a r’s event will take place Wednesday, May 13, at the Pendleton Red Lion. This is the 10th year for the Crystal Apple program , which is spon sored by the UMESD, with support from Mid Columbia Bus C om pany, B ank o f Eastern Oregon, Pendleton Red Lion, East Oregonian and the Hermiston Herald, among others. The purpose o f the awards is to recognize in dividuals who help to make our schools the best they can be. “Outstanding members o f our community deserve recognition and praise for their hard work and dedica tion to educating our young people," said Casey White, Crystal Apple Awards direc tor. “We want to be able to say a big 'thank you’ to these wonderful individuals and those w ho want to recognize them.” The awards are open to all members of the regular classified and certificated service in Umatilla and Mor row County school districts. It is not open to administra tors, though administrators are encouraged to nominate exemplary employees. The lone Speech and Debate team traveled to Palo Alto, CA on February 6-9 to compete in the Stanford U n iv ersity High School Speech and Debate Tourna ment. Six members o f the team made the trip with Coach Jim Raible. After attending 10 tournaments in Oregon and W ashington already this year, the students set their sites on S tanford. A fter much fund raising and prep aration, they were ready. The tournament is one o f the premier events on the west coast and, in fact, draws competitors from across the country. With approximately 120 schools competing, the lone team certainly had its work cut out for it. “ It’s only the third year for the program,” said Raible, “but a few students are ready for national com petition now, and others peed to see the best to help them grow. Freshman Jer emy Coleman competed in Humorous Interpretation, with his best round being a fourth place finish. Senior Ronney Wilson competed in Im prom ptu Speaking, taking first in one o f his rounds. Junior Mikey Raible competed in Spontaneous Argumentation, advancing to the semi-final round and just missing finals. Senior Matt C ole man and sophomore Dennis Schmidt competed in Stu dent Congress. Coleman's highest scoring speech dur ing the four 2-hour ses sions was a 5 out 6, while S ch m id t’s highest was a perfect six for a speech on a resolution involving troop levels in Afghanistan. The debate events had two divisions, junior varsity and varsity. On Friday, before their events started, the team took some time to explore San Francisco. They drove th ro u g h d o w n to w n and Chinatown before arriving at Fisherman’s W harf and Pier 39. The group walked around the area sightsee ing, enjoying the view o f A lcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. “ W hile it may be tempting to rest after a big trip like this, the team knows it’s time to get right back to preparing, practicing, and fund-raising,” said Coach Raible after returning from California. The team still has two more invitational tournaments before gearing up for districts, state, and the N ational Q u alify in g Tournament.
