Applications available for South ¡Morrow County Scholarship Trust Bill Rietmann o f lone was elected president o f the South Morrow County Scholarship Trust for the 2009 year at the SMCST’s annual meeting in Heppner on January 26. Barb Hayes was elected vice-president, Del LaRue was elected treasurer, and Sharon Harris secretary. Board members are Missy Cutsforth, Martha Munkers, and Car rie Grieb. The South Morrow County Scholarship Trust was established several years ago to provide funds to grant scholarships to graduating seniors from Heppner and lone High Schools. Applications for this year’s scholarships are available in the form of a computer disk at both high schools, starting in March. Deadline to turn them in will April 15. WCVEDG to hold annual meeting The annual meeting o f Willow Creek Valley Eco nomic Development Group will be held Thursday, Febru ary 19, at St. Patrick’s Senior Center. The hosted luncheon will begin at 11:30 with Kimberly L.indsay speaking on the economic impact of the Secure Residential Treatment Facility. (See chart below for age-related timelines.) In order to make training as convenient as possible, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department now offers this free safety and education program and certification online on the website www.rideATVoregon.org. SAFETY TRAINING EXEMPTION: Safety training isn't mandatory for riders using an ATV or off-road motorcy cle for farming, agriculture, forestry, nursery, Christmas tree growing operations or when riding on private land. M a n d a t o r y t r a in in g A g es Daniel Andrew Anderson Daniel Andrew An derson, a resident o f Pendle ton died Friday, February 6, 2009, at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Heppner, fol lowing an illness. He was 64 years old. Daniel was bom on December 18, 1944 in Pendle ton to An drew and F lo re n c e (T ra d e r) Anderson. H e w a s Daniel Andrew ra is e d in Anderson Heppner. On April 10, 1965 he married Jacqueline Studer in Hermiston. The couple lived in Heppner for the first six years and later moved to Pendleton where they lived for 37 years. He enjoyed playing pool, archery, fishing. Fast Draw “ C ow boy A c tio n ” C o m p etitio n s, and good conversation. He was also a member o f the Pendleton Senior Center and the NE O regon B ow hunter’s A s sociation. He is survived by: his wife Jacqueline A. Anderson at the home in Pendleton; sisters, Darline Schoonover o f Heppner, Helen Anderson o f Springfield, and Louise Anderson o f M exico; one brother Larry Anderson o f M adras; sons Jeff A nder son o f Spokane, WA and Jam es A nderson o f Stan field; daughter Jacqueline M. Futter o f Pendleton; as well as four grandchildren, Arie Futter, Andrew Futter, Adam Futter and Mercedes Futter; and several great grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents Andrew (Andy) and Florence Anderson, and a grandson Aaron Gregory Daniel Futter. A funeral w ill be co n d u cted on T hursday, February 12, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Bethel Assembly o f G od C hurch, on A irport Road, in Pendleton. Burial will follow at Olney Cem etery. Burns Mortuary o f Pendleton is in charge o f arrangements. Kathleen M. Monahan Hisler Kathleen M. Hisler, 100, o f Heppner died Thurs day, January 29, 2009 at W illow Creek Valley A s sisted Living F acility in Heppner. She was bom Febru ary 21,1 908, in Condon, the daughter o f Frank and Marie Farley Monahan, early Gil liam and Morrow County sheep ranchers. She was one o f M orrow C ounties Centenarian Pioneer. In 1912, K athleen and her family moved from the Monahan-Murtha Ranch, on Rock Creek, near Con d o n , to H eppner. K athleen and her s ib lin g s Mary, Jimmy, P a tric ia , Kathleen ,, ... v, M. and cous- Monahan Hisler in, James Farley were raised on the M ona han’s Willow Creek Ranch, Penland Prairie, Linger Lon ger, and Ditch Creek Hold ings. Mrs. Hisler was a de vout Catholic. In early child hood, she attended school in H eppner and C atholic parochial school in Condon, and Mt. Angel, graduating in 1927 from St. Joseph’s Academy in Pendleton. On N ovem ber 14, 1928 she married Paul E. Hisler in Heppner. In 1929 they moved to the Hisler ranch on upper Little Butter Creek where they engaged in the sheep business and later converted to cattle. K athleen lived on the H isler ranch for 67 y ears, she w as a loving rancher’s wife, mother and homemaker, who loved and enjoyed country life. Kath leen and Paul moved into Heppner in 1995, the couple was married for 72 years. Kathleen and cous in Jam es J. Farley w ere honored to be Queen and Grand Marshall o f the St. P a tric k 's Day P arade in 1988. She was proud o f her Irish heritage. In early years, she was active in Morrow County Cowbelles, St. Pat rick’s Catholic Church, and a lifetime supporter o f the M orrow County Fair and Rodeo. K a th le e n w as a wom an w ith an am azing bright mind her entire life. When it came to knowledge o f Morrow or Gilliam Coun ty history, people would seek her help. She could recall it like it was yesterday. Her longevity o f life, can be accredited to wonderful health care providers, fam ily, friends, and her unwav ering deep faith and will to live. For over a century of life, she has touched all who have known her. Kathleen has resided at H ep p n er’s Willow Creek Terrace As- Farmer’s Market organization meeting to be held sisted Living since 2003, where she could not have been happier. Survivors include; d au g h ters, Joan S um ner and her husband Jim o f The Dalles and Francine Bris tow and her husband Tom o f Rockaway Beach; son, Paul H isler and his wife Susan o f H eppner; eight g ran d ch ild ren ; 13 g re a t grandchildren; two great- g reat-g ran d ch ild ren ; and numerous nieces and neph ews. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Paul in 2000; grandson, Shad Hisler in 1997; her parents; sisters, Patricia Barrie and Mary Causey; and brother, James Monahan. A funeral mass for Mrs. Hisler was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at St. P a tric k ’s C atholic C hurch in H ep pner. C oncluding service and burial will follow at the Heppner Masonic Cemetery. Recitation of the Rosary was held at 7 p.m. on Monday, February 2, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. DeLeva Mae Rill DeLeva “Dee” Mae Rill, 74, o f Othello, died Friday February 6, 2009 at her home with her family at her side. D eLeva w as born in Elgin on May 2, 1934 to F red and D o r t h y (Croghan) W ils o n . As a to d dler, De- Leva lost b o th o f her par DeLeva Mae Rill ents. Her au n t H a zel as well as her entire extended family raised her. She graduated as Valedicto rian from Elgin High School in 1951. While in high school, DeLeva was a member o f the Drama Club, p artici pated in 4H and played in the school band. She also was active in the Order o f Rainbow for girls. She was a very talented musician and received a music scholarship to Eastern Oregon College (University). W h ile a tte n d in g EOC, she met Myron Rill. They married on August 16, 1953 in Elgin. They lived in Heppner where she and My ron farmed. When Myron left to serve in the Army at Ft. Sill, OK, DeLeva went with him. While in O kla homa, she worked at the PX on base. A fter M yron was discharged, they returned to Heppner and the farm. They bought a farm near Connell in 1965 and moved there until 1982 when they settled on a farm near Othello. DeLeva worked as a dietary aid at the Othello C om m unity H ospital for over 20 years. She was still working one day a week un til July o f last year. She was a member o f the Children’s Hospital Orthopedic Guild in Othello, The Grange and the Othello Relay For Life. She loved all animals and especially enjoyed raising poultry. She acted as the poultry and rabbit superin tendent at the Adams County Fair for many years. DeLeva always en jo y ed v isitin g and loved having people drop in for some o f her baked treats. She was a talented painter and enjoyed creating greet ing cards with her artwork. She was an avid garden er and would spend many hours working in the garden with her husband. DeLeva’s special joy was being a wife and being with her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered as a giving person who was very real from the first time you met her. She was preceded in death by her parents and her aunt Hazel. A celebration o f her life will be held at Stevens Funeral Chapel on Wednes day February 11, 2009 at 1 p.m. Final services will be held at the Elgin Com munity Center on Thursday, F eb ru ary 12, 2009 w ith burial to follow at the Elgin Cemetery.
