Our group, the Heppner Civics Club, ar rived around 4 a.m. to get in line for the ticketed sections. As we stood in line trying to keep warm, we reflected on what we’d gone through to get there. We had all been fundraising for a full year, earning money to cover the cost of the trip and to have spending money once we were there. We washed dishes, bussed tables, re turned cans, and sold raffle tickets, all the while keeping our eye on the prize: the trip to Washington, D.C. And now, standing in line, we met our final obstacle: ft was COLD. Very few of us were used to being somewhere where it was both very cold and very humid, and no matter how many layers we had on, it still chilled us to the bone. When they finally started the line through se curity and we were able to get onto the Mall it was well worth the wait. Through sheer luck and a bit of old-fashioned ingenuity, we managed to find a place to stand that had a clear view of the platform on which the ceremony actually took place, and also the Jumbotron, which broadcast close-up images of all of happenings. We stood right on the edge of the reflecting pool in front of the Capitol Building, and were only 1,000 feet away from where President Obama was sworn in. The ceremony itself was short and concise, as was Obama’s speech, but the impression it made on us all will last a lifetime. We were a part of history that day, lost in a sea of people, a joyous mob all together for one purpose. I’m sure that I won’t forget my experience anytime soon, and 1 don’t think any of my classmates will, either. Lady Cards lose two league games Mustang wrestlers go 2-2 in dual action The Heppner wres T he Mu s t a n g s tling team was in Irrigon for a dual tournament on Saturday. The tournament included Irrigon, Umatilla, Mac Hi JV, Hermiston JV, La Grande, Heppner, and Stevenson, WA. In a dual format teams line up and wrestle weight by weight to score team points. The Mustangs have never won a dual in its short history due mostly to lack of wrestlers to fill enough of the weight class es. Saturday, Heppner had all but three weight classes covered and won two out of four duals, beating Mac Hi JV and Umatilla, while losing to Irrigon and Ste venson. He ppne r first matched up against host Ir rigon. The heavy underdog Mustangs showed up to wrestle and nearly pulled off a win. Despite giving up 18 points to forfeits, Hep pner ended up losing only 37-48. Of the 11 matches wrestled in the dual, Hep pner won six and lost five. Heppner picked up wins and team points from Grant Smith, John Nelson, Jarreid Miller, Chance Day, Wacy Coil and Zech Hintz. The point swing of one more w in could have put the team score in Heppner’s favor. picked up their first dual win ever by a score of 48- 39 against Mac Hi JV in the next round by sheer force of numbers. Heppner scored 30 points in forfeits from Jarreid Miller, Tyler Robinson, Wacy Coil, Drew Brannon, and Alex Fuentes and got wins by pins from Grant Smith and Chance Day. The 103 weight class was a double forfeit. Heppner next faced Stevenson and lost 32- 54. The team points came through forfeit wins by Zach Yocom, Drew Brannon, and Wacy Coil and major deci sions by Grant Smith and Chance Day. Again, 103 was a double forfeit. The Mustangs last dual for the day was the team’s second win ever and came against Umatilla by a score of 60-36. Heppner got forfeit points from Zach Yocom, Chance Day, Tyler Robinson, Wacy Coil and Alex Fuentes. The 103 and 119 were double forfeits, so Heppner only gave up advantage points at 285. Grant Smith, Jarreid Miller and Zach Hintz all won their matches by pins. Grant Smith, Chance Day and Wacy Coil went un defeated for the day and won all four of their individual By Jennifer Wilson improved league record of 5-5 in the Blue Mountain Conference for the Lady Mustangs. Despite experienc ing some missed layins, the Mustangs anticipated the Knights passes and finished the game with plenty of steals. The Lady Mustangs finished the game with a powerful fourth quarter. Lady Mustangs on three game winning streak With the last two wins on the road, the Lady Mustangs played at home against the Irrigon Knights last Saturday to turn two straight w ins into three. The Mustangs coasted into a 51 - 20 win. "We're learning to win," said Coach Mark Dowdy. The Lady Cardinals pulled down a Horizon rebound and Beth Morter was fouled with 9.4 second left in the game. She hit the front end of a one and one to build a two point lead. But Horizon wasn’t done, taking the ball down court making to tie the game at 31 as time ran out. The Lady Cards hung in with another Beth Morter free throw and bas ket alternating with a couple of Horizon baskets. The Lady Hawks took their one point lead and held the ball, forcing lone to foul. Hori zon went to the free throw line six times in the last minute and didn't make any until two went in with .8 seconds remaining, giving Horizon the 37-34 win. Beth Morter led the team in scoring with 17 points. Stefanie Archer and Briana Peterson each added six. Stefanie Archer had another good night on the boards, pulling down 14 rebounds and Beth Morter grabbed seven steals. “We played a good game and I was proud of the team for working hard and fighting back,” said Coach Mike Garrett. “There are a lot of things that we are go ing to be able to take from this game and improve on in the next couple of weeks. I expect Horizon Christian will be at the district tourna ment. They are one of the better teams we have seen this year.” After a long trip back from Hood River and a short night, the Lady Cards took the court against Condon/ Wheeler in lone Saturday afternoon looking a little weary. The Lady Knights used a 12-0 run spanning the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the sec ond quarter to put the Lady Cards in an 11 point hole at halftime, 19-8. C ondon/W heeler hit the first score of the third quarter but finally lone showed a spark of life, making eight unanswered points to pull within five points midway through the period. The Cards got within five again when 5:52 re mained in the game but the Lady Knights had an answer, rebuilding the lead to nine with 2:25 left in the game.
