Elks Scholarship winners named T he Heppner Elks Lodge #358 recently announced the winners o f the local 2008-2009 Most Valuable Stu dent Awards. Many outstanding young men and women competed for awards this year with some very impressive applications. The scholarship winners are as follows: Boys - 1st place Joseph Pranger (HHS), $700; and 2nd place Clay Morter (IHS), $350. Girls - 1st place Margaret Armato (HHS), $700; 2nd place Tiana Camarillo (IHS), $350; 3rd place Sherilyn Peck (HHS), $200; and 4th place Brenna Rietmann (IHS), $200. Applications for the first place winners for the boy’s and girl’s divisions were forwarded to the Elks dis trict competition which was held on January. Winners for district competition have not yet been announced. HES students receive honor cards Eighty-six Heppner Elementary School students received an honor card for the second quarter o f the 2008- 09 school year. HES students must m aintain positive grades, behavior, and attendance to receive this award. Mrs. Pettyjohn was bom at Heppner on August 9,1922 one o f eleven c h ild r e n b o r n to M a th e w and Grace M cFerrin H u g h es. S he w as raised in Betty M. the H ep- Pettyjohn pner area and attended school at the Madison School House. On October 3, 1938 she m arried E llis Lloyd Pettyjohn in Walla Walla, WA. The couple had three daughters and one son. They farmed in the Heppner area until her husband’s death in December o f 2000. She worked at Pioneer Memorial Hospital until she retired. She enjoyed bowling, sew ing and cooking. M rs. Pettyjohn is survived by: daughters, Ma rie Kellogg o f Pendleton, and Rita Britt and her hus band Roger o f Heppner; son, Rick Pettyjohn o f Heppner; 11 grandchildren; 16 great g ra n d c h ild re n ; and tw o great-great-grandchildren. Community spaghetti dinner to be held for Howe family The H ow e’s Com munity Fundraiser event has been scheduled for Thurs day evening, February 26, at the Heppner Elks Lodge. A spaghetti dinner will be served, with the suggested minimum donation to be $7 per person. Sandra Haynes has d o n ated one o f h er framed prints to be raffled off with all proceeds going to the Howe’s to help pay their medical costs. Start ing time o f the event will be confirmed at a later date.
