Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, January 21,2009 - FIVE Mustangs endure first league loss By Jennifer Wilson The Mustangs came out slower than usual in the game against the Enterprise Outlaws last Friday. Even though they fought back in the second half, it w asn’t enough to hold off the Out laws who won the game 71-61. It was a tough loss for the m ustangs as they watched their perfect league record slip from 3-0 to 3-1. At the end o f the first quarter the Mustangs were only down by five but they struggled in the second quarter remaining scoreless for three straight minutes. A time out was called by the M ustangs coach to hope fully end the scoring slump. The mustangs came out to finish the first half strong with a 6-0 scoring streak helping close the Outlaws lead to six. Jared H uddleston made some key plays in the third quarter to tie up the gam e. W ith the fans on their feet, the Mustangs finally took the lead but the O u tlaw s answ ered back with a press and multiple 3 pointers. The Lady Cards led 14-10 after one with four points from Briana Peterson and back-to-back buckets from Mary Rietmann. The Cardinals won the game 60-37. The game was tight in the early going as tough defense kept the scoring low. The Cards trailed 6-8 after one quarter. Cory Pe terson tied it up early in the second and Matt Hams followed up with three free throws after being fouled on a three point attempt. Echo tied the game back up midway through the frame and went ahead 18-17 with 1:35 on the clock. Tan ner Rietmann was fed back- to-back passes from Clay Morter under the basket and the Cardinals took a lead they would not relinquish. RJ Ramos finished the half with a basket to make the h a lf tim e score lone 23- Echo 18. The Cardinals hit the third quarter hard, going on an 8-0 run to open the quar ter and holding Echo score less for the first six minutes. At the end o f the period, the Cards had widened the lead to 12 points, 39-27. The Cardinals went on a 16-3 run in the fourth quarter to erase all doubt building the lead to 25 before coasting to the win.
