OWEB announces new
management region
The O regon Wa
te rs h e d E n h a n c e m e n t
Board (OWEB) officially
announces the formation
o f a new M id-Columbia
management region. This
region, also referred to as
Region 6, encompasses six
counties: Umatilla, Mor
row, G illiam , Sherm an,
W heeler and Grant. The
Field office is located in
Condon and is staffed by
Sue Greer, the Regional
Program R epresentative
(RPR).
OW EB is a state
agency that provides grants
for projects that benefit fish
and wildlife and support
co m m u n ities and local
economies. These grants
support and build the ca
pacity o f watershed coun
cils, soil and water conser
vation districts, tribal gov
ernments, and other local
partners. Over the past 10
years, OWEB has awarded
more than $19 million to
these 6 counties, for the
completion o f a wide range
o f projects. For example,
OWEB recently awarded
$266,000 to improve fish
and wildlife habitat on the
Middle Fork o f the John
Day.
The need for the
new region is a result o f
an increase in grant appli
cations and an increasing
number of open grants and
total grants being adminis
tered. In order to maintain
and improve support and
custom er serv ice to its
grantees, applicants and
partners, OWEB received
approval from the legis
lature to create this new
service area.
Ms.Greer, hired in
August o f 2008, has spent
the last four months train
ing on protocols and proce
dures and began managing
over 80 open grants in
the region. As the Mid-
Columbia RPR, Ms. Greer
w ill provide day-to-day
oversight o f grant project
implementation, program
representation with all wa
tershed councils and other
focal partners, review and
evaluation o f grant appli
cations, and coordination
with a broad range of agen
cies, governments, organi
zations and groups.
P rio r to jo in in g
OWEB, Ms. Greer spent
five years as an employee
o f the W heeler Soil and
Water Conservation Dis
trict. During that period,
she acted as W atershed
Coordinator for both the
B ridge C reek and M id-
John Day Watershed Coun
