Commending the MC Sheriff’s Department on a job well done To the editor: I would like to commend the Morrow County Sheriff’s Department. On December 26, 2008 at approxi mately 6 a.m. I walked outside to find that my pickup had been stolen. I called the Sheriff’s office and I talked to Dispatcher Erick Patton. Within half an hour Undersheriff Steve Myren contacted me and by 9 a.m. my pickup was recov ered. 1 again would just like to commend Erick Patton and Undersheriff Steve Myren for their professionalism and a job well done. Rhea Ashbeck Mary L. Rhea Ash beck was bom on June 15, 1 9 1 8 on R hea C reek in H eppner to parents, C urtis C. and C e cil A lice Rankin Rhea. She d ie d on Ja n u a ry 4, 2009 at Mary L. Rhea her home Ashbeck on L ittle Buttercreek in Echo at the age of 90 years. T he R hea fa m ily moved to the Stanfield M eadows in 1924. M ary attended school in Stanfield, graduating in 1936. She w orked in the telephone office in Stanfield for four years. Mary was united in marriage to Leo Ashbeck on November 23, 1946 in Our Lady o f A ngels Catholic Church in Hermiston. To this union four sons were bom: Mitch, Alvin, Calvin, and Melvin. They purchased their farm on Little Butter- creek in 1963 where she has lived since. Mary was a member o f Our Lady of Angels Cath olic Church in Hermiston. She loved baking for her children and grandchildren. M ary en jo y ed b o w lin g , word search puzzles, cross word puzzles, and cherished family gatherings. She is survived by: her sons, Mitch and wife Tag, Alvin and wife Julie, and Melvin Ashbeck, all of Echo, and Calvin and wife Karen Ashbeck o f Pendle ton; sister, Alice Buckley of Echo; brother, Bob Rhea of Ukiah; eight grandchildren, Angie, Rob, and Shelly Ash beck, Jodie Swanson, Jennie Benedict, Andy Ashbeck, Kelli Brooks, and Corey Ashbeck; 11 great-grand children; and several nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by: her husband of 58 years, Leo in 2004; her parents; sisters, Sophronia K irkham , Jo L ieseg an g , and Marie Hedrick; and a brother, Carl Rhea. She began work in family District services but then returned to college where she graduated in 1979 from W illam ette University School o f Law at Salem. Following gradua tion she returned to Hep pner and began practicing law w ith the W inter and Sw eeney Law Firm. She m arried Tony D oherty o f Heppner. The couple was married for a brief time, they later divorced. From 1987 until 1997 she worked as council for Morrow County. She then went into private practice for herself. She was a member o f the O regon State Bar A sso ciatio n . In addition to serving as the current Mayor, she was a former council member for the City o f L exington. She loved anim als, and particularly enjoyed raising horses. Survivors include: her brother, John Boyer and his wife Kelly of Lexington; niece, Brooke Kates; and nephew, Tyler Boyer. She was preceded in death by her parents. A memorial service for Ms. Doherty was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 5, at the lone Grange Hall. McCurdy Donna M. McCurdy, 87, o f Heppner, died peace fully at her home Friday, January 2, 2009 following a courageous battle with cancer. She was bom Octo ber 2, 1921 in Waseca, MN, one of nine chil dren born to Joseph and Palma Everson Nelson. She grew up a nd a t t e n d e d Donna M. school in McCurdy Waseca, MN becoming the first in the family to graduate from high school which she did in 1940. Donna lost her father at an early age and in the sixth grade began working out o f the home to help pro vide for herself and the other family members. Fo l l o wi n g high school, she w orked as a bookkeeper in Waseca until moving to San Diego, CA in 1942 with her mother and brother to work in the Rohr A ircraft factory in m ate rial control. There she met her future husband, Harlan McCurdy Jr. from Heppner w ho was serv in g in the United States Army at Camp Roberts. Harlan and Donna were married in San Diego on November 2, 1943. W hen H arlan was sent overseas in 1944, she m oved to H eppner w ith their infant daughter, Diane to stay with H arlan’s par ents until his return. After a series o f moves to Ukiah, lone, Portland and Pomeroy, WA she returned to Heppner and resided there until her death. Donna and Harlan raised th ree “ w o nderful g irls ,” as she d e sc rib e d them , D iane M oyer and her husband Bruce o f Lolo, MT, Karen Dubuque and her husband Doug o f Hep pner and Janet C urrin o f Pendleton. She was very close to her grandchildren, Randi Moyer, Cyndi Meyer, Brian, Casey and Joel Currin and her three great grand children, Taylor and Ryan Stemple and Chaise Meyer. The last few years, all o f the family enjoyed an an nual celebration for Donna’s birthday at Randi’s houses in Spokane, WA. Over the years she’s enjoyed many trips across the country and Canada and particularly enjoyed a trip with the entire fam ily to Hawaii in 2006 and to Ari zona in 2007 and 2008. She kept in close contact with fam ily m em bers in M in nesota attending reunions on a regular basis. She last attended with Diane, Karen and Janet in 2007. She w as very a c tive in the Lutheran church, serving for many years in various capacities for Hope Lutheran in Heppner. She w as g re a tly a p p re cia te d for her contributions and service. She is survived by: her children, Diane, Karen, and Janet; five grandchil dren and three great-grand children; sister, Phyllis Spit- tier and her husband Bill of Waseca, MN; and brother Warren Nelson and his wife Audrey o f Sun City, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harlan in 1990, six brothers and one sister. A funeral service for Mrs. McCurdy will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 9, at Hope Lutheran Church in H eppner. C on clu d in g service and interment will follow at the Heppner Ma sonic Cemetery. W ick lund, 57, o f Heppner died Thursday, January 1,2009 at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. He was born June 27, 1951 in Oregon City the son of B ob and Arlene Snyder Wicklund. He w as raised and attended school at Thomas W. M o l a l l a Wicklund w here he played football and wrestled. He graduated from Molalla High School in 1969. On June 12,1971 he married Shannon J. Maben at Molalla. He entered the Unit ed States Arm y in 1971, serving in Vietnam for one year. He was then stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, CO until his honor able discharge in 1974. M r. W i c k l u n d worked at S taff Jennings boat marina in Portland be fore moving to Heppner to help run a family business, Court Street Market, until its closing in 2000. He also worked at the co-generation plant in Heppner for a time before working as a mainte nance technician at Pioneer Memorial Hospital. He started volunteer work with the Heppner Fire and Rescue in 1984 and then started driving ambulance in 1985. He became an Emer gency Medical Technician in 1999. He was alw ays at the rodeo and football games with the ambulance; he loved his work and being able to help people. Tom also coached little league baseball and loved hunting and trips to the mountains. Survivors include: his w ife, Shannon W ick lund o f Heppner; daughter, Rebecca Sw earingen and her husband D anofPrinev- ille; son, Jered Wicklund of Heppner; parents, Bob and Arlene Wicklund o f Oregon City; brother, John Wick lund and his wife Sandee of Oregon City; sister, Margie Gregory o f Molalla; brother- in-laws, Greg Maben and his wife Trish o f Heppner, Jeff Maben and his wife Kathy o f John Day; mother-in-law, Ruth M aben o f Heppner; granddaughters, Julie and W hitney; and num erous nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Mr. Wicklund was held 2 p.m. Sunday, January 4, at the Heppner Elementary School Gymnasium. Hazel Reid Hazel Reid, 83, o f Heppner died Saturday, Jan uary 3, 2009 at her home. She was bom Octo ber 26, 1925 in Tellico Plains, T N , th e d a u g h te r of Lu t her and Ora Ellis Spivey. She w as raised in BakerCity H«zelR*l where she graduated from high school in 1945. She m et her first husband, Mark Kandle and they were married in 1948 and had three children. Mark died in 1974. She then mar ried Robert Reid in October o f 1977 and the couple settled in H eppner where they have been residents for the last 20 years. Robert has four children. Mrs. Reid enjoyed fishing, hunting, crocheting, and spending time in her garden. She is survived by: her husband Robert o f Hep pner; eight children, Ricky Lee Kandle, Bruce Kandle, Loraine W ilson, Roberta C onlee, R aym ond R eid, Melba Mitchell, Janie Kep- pler, and Judy Walstrom; brothers, C laude Spivey, Roy Spivey, Clyde Spivey, and James Spivey; sisters, Blanch Pearce and LaVella Jellick; 23 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and neph ews. She was preceded in death by: her parents; her first husband Mark Kandle; a son Duane Kandle; broth ers, Earl Spivey and Glenn Spivey; and a sister Edna Springer. A funeral service for Mrs. Reid was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Janu ary 7, 2009 at the Heppner Elks Lodge in Heppner. A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, January 7,2009 at Mt.
