I he lone boys got
th e ir seco n d w in o f the
season in impressive fash
ion, d e fe atin g R iverside
in Boardman on Monday,
December 22.
W ith no p ra c tic e
since the previous Tuesday,
fans might have expected
a sloppy effort from both
team s but the Cards took
the court looking sharp,
lone jumped out to a 15-12
first quarter advantage w ith
several o f the buckets com
ing oil'the fast break. Early
in the second, the Cardinals
ran off an 11-1 run to build
up a 13 point lead. River
side w asn't about to give
in though, cutting the lead
to five at the half, 28-23.
There was no letup in the
third as lone outscored the
Pirates 20-9, led by eight
points from both Zac Orem
and Matt Hams. T he Cards
scored the first six points of
the fourth quarter to build
their biggest lead o f the day,
22 points before hammering
home the 64-49 w in.
Sizzling hot shoot
ing and good defense was
the story o f the game for
lone. O verall, the C ards
shot 54% from the field and
equaled that p e rc en ta g e
from outside the three point
line. The Cards shot over
60% in the first and third
quarters.
Matt Hams led all
scorers with 21 points in
cluding three three-pointers.
Zac Orem continued to con

Cardinals had 21 assists to
just eight for the Pirates led

Cory Peterson also led the
team with six steals. Matt
Hams had four blocks.
Coach Dennis Ste-
fani was p leasan tly su r
prised by the outing after
a week o f missed practices
due to snow. “ The team
moved the ball well, doing
a great job o f keeping the
floor spread allowing cut
ting lanes to open towards
the basket. But most o f all
I liked seeing, the start o f
us getting the ball inside to
the posts, something 1 think
w e have struggled with” he
said. “Also 1 felt we played
a vcry good complete defen
sive game. We not only put
great pressure on them, but
when the shot went up we
did a terrific job o f screen
ing out and controlling the
boards.”
The Cardinals will
host a snow-delayed game
against D ufur on Friday
and travel to Stanfield on
Saturday.
Lady Cards
The Lady Cardinals
hung close to Riverside in
the first half, trailing just
10-11 at the break but an
ice cold second half was the
story of the game as they lost
to the Lady Pirates 44-17.
In the first half, both teams
looked like they had not
practiced in almost a week
but Riverside was able to
get their offense moving and
scoring in the second.
Stefanie Archer led
the Lady Cards in scoring
with seven points. Tiana
Camarillo added four.
