October 29,2008 Mustangs to host volleyball playoff game on Saturday Cardinals fall to Cougars 52-6 Heppner Mustangs had a lot o f volleyball the week o f October 20. They played their last league game in Stanfield on Tuesday, Oc tober 21, winning in three 25-20,25-10,25-19. On Thursday, O c tober 23, they were back in the area playing a tie breaker against Weston for seeding at the District Cham pion ships. The mustangs played to a packed gym. The energy brought by the community support in the H ermiston gym powered the Mustang to a win against the Tiger Scotts in a shocking three game match. 25-16, 25-19, 25-17. With that game be hind them , the M ustangs earned the top spot at the district championship games in E n te rp rise on S a tu r day. The mustangs waited out the bracket gam es to learn that they would be playing the Tiger Scotts for the championship title. The match was not pressure free, but the M ustangs played well and finished in the top spot, earning the champion trophy in four games 25-21, 25-16, 20-25, and 25-16. L enka D o b o so v a and Sherilyn Peck w ere the M ustangs’ first team honorees while JoAnna Pat ton made second team and Jessica Hughes and Maggie Armato earned honorable mention. On Saturday, N o vem ber 1, at 4 p.m. the Mustangs will play Lakev- iew at home for their play off game. If the Mustangs win this gam e they will advance to the state tourna ment that begins on Friday, November 7, and continues through November 8 in For est Grove. The lone Cardinals had a rocky ride at Echo last Friday night, falling to the Cougars 52-6. A reconfig ured offense sputtered but the Cards also had defen sive trouble, allowing the Cougars too many trips to pay dirt. Echo led 14-0 af ter one quarter but blew the game open in the sec ond, scoring 32 unanswered points to lead 46-0 at the half. lone had an opportu nity to score in the second q u arter after M att Hams took a Zac Orem pass 64 yards, all the way to the Cougar two yard line. But a Cardinal fumble was recov ered by the Cougars and the opportunity was lost. The Cougars scored once m ore with 2:31 re maining in the third quarter. Only Crane, another 1A school, had a better volleyball GPA at 3.96. This program, spon sored by the Dairy Farm ers o f Oregon, recognizes Senior mothers perform during half time of football game outstanding achievement in the classroom. The boys and girls team in each OSAA- sanctioned activity with the highest team grade point average (G.P.A.) earns the Academic All-State Award. Each member o f a winning team receives a much-cov eted “got milk?” sweatshirt, co m m em orative pin and a certificate. The school receives a plaque in honor o f its team. Members o f top ten schools in each activity at each classification are also recognized with a com memorative pin by the Dairy Farmers o f Oregon and the OSAA. Research has shown that playing chess has many educational and social ben efits. C hildren who play chess, practice logical think ing, co ncentration, p lan ning, pattern recognition, self-d iscip lin e, and also learn to take responsibility for their own mistakes. The high school and middle school students who were part of the club in el ementary school, now come down to tutor the new chess players. “It is so rewarding to see these students give back to the program,” commented Mrs. Elguezabal, one o f the advisors. However, the club is still in need o f more help. “Just imagine yourself in a room with 18 first graders w ho w ould love to play chess, but don’t know how. It’s just impossible to get to everyone,” added Mrs. Matteson, another one of the advisors. Even if you d o n ’t know how to play, but would like to learn, you can be part o f this group.
